og:Image: Planetside 2 on the PS4

In news that threw my morning for a loop, Sony has announced that Planetside 2 will be coming to the PlayStation 4. Oh, and DC Universe Online too but...ya know...Planetside.

No release date has been given due to the fluidity of the PS4 at the moment but I already have a host of questions about this release. Namely, will console players be given their own dedicated servers or will they be playing with PC players? How will in-game puchasing work? Does this mean that Station cash (the online currency Sony uses) will be transferable to PS4 accounts? Sony also mentioned that both Planetside 2 and DC Universe Online will be following the free-to-play model they currently employ on the PC, so there will need to be some way for in-game purchases to be made.

The game itself is your standard FPS but held within the trappings of a large scale MMO, so things like control will surely be able to transfer well to a console. But what about graphical fidelity and player rendering. To pull this off successfully the PS4 will need to be a powerful machine...or the console version of Planetside 2 will need to be scaled down.

Creative Director of Planetside 2, Matthew Higby, referred to the upcoming E3 for the answers to detailed questions regarding the game on the PS4, and you can guarantee that I'll be there asking them. One thing seems for sure, publishers are now recognizing the viability of MMO's within the console environment. This could get interesting.

At the very least, it's nice to see some good F2P games being brought into the console space, at least where Sony is concerned. Then again, it's much easier to call your multiplayer game free-to-play when your console's online service doesn't have a subscription fee. Unless Planetside 2 has full cross-platform play and the ability to use a pre-existing account from the PC version though, I think I'll stick to my original PC character, even if PS2 does kinda run like crap on my computer.

Also, what were you thinking putting that hideous NC scum as the header image, Joseph?! TR4LYFE

Another reason as to why I am going to be dropping $350 to $500 day one for the PS4. I enjoy playing PS2 but my computer can't handle it really well so it's not all that fantastic to watch, also my explosions are very dull and muted. Just the other day I was playing and watched a Galaxy, a GALAXY, crash into the ground with nothing more than a small fizzle because my machine is not all that great.

Another game that is coming to the PS4 that is also Free2Play and it will be a launch title, a game called Warframe. Another game I really enjoy playing but looks like dog shit on my computer.

Brad has stated that the PS4 is not going to be getting any good games within the launch window, but with PS2 and WarFrame coming out and are both free to play, it's looking like I won't even have to buy a game to come with my fancy new console of joy!

SHOW US WHAT YOU GOT MICROSOFT?!?!

Really glad to hear it; not a PC gamer myself but Planetside 2 always has looked awesome and seemed really fun. Here's hoping this is the first of many models that try out new pay-to-play formulas in the upcoming new console generation. It'd be an ambitious project, but I'd fucking love to get to play Planetside 2 on PS4 directly alongside or against PC players.

PS2 is going to be on PS4. Does anyone else see how weird that sounds?

Anyways, it is good to hear that. It would be even better if it is cross-platform. The scale of PS2 can get even bigger and more mind-blowing.

My PC runs this just fine so while I won't be getting this version I must admit the idea of cross-platform intrigues me, hopefully Sony will decide to go that route when going through with the PS4 version.

Looking forward to playing this but wont the PC players have a small advantage since they are using a mouse?
