og:image: ps3 firmware 4.45

So about that PS3 4.45 Firmware update. Originally the update was supposed to add additional functionality to Trophy notifications and other small fixes. Instead it looks like multiple users began reporting the update had been bricking their PS3's by completely removing the navigation options, leaving them looking at nothing more than that sparkling wavy line mocking them. Always mocking them.

Sony has now pulled the firmware update and is currently investigating, but by the looks of the Sony help forum it seems many of those effected had additional 3rd party hard drives installed on their consoles. We don't know if that's the culprit, and Sony has not commented further, but this seems to be the common denominator. Sony has apologized today, sending a message to Kotaku stating:

"We are aware of reports that the recent PlayStation 3 system software update (version 4.45) has caused the XMB to not display on a small number of PS3 systems

"We have temporarily taken 4.45 offline and are investigating the cause of the problem. We will announce when the system update is available for download as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience."

If you are one of the unlucky ones to lose access to your PS3, Sony is telling its customers to wait while they come up with a solution. In the meantime you can always just pretend that your PS3 is an offline Xbox One and you've already entered the next generation.

Fortunately, I finished TLOU the night before, so I wasn't playing any PS3 yesterday and was able to hear about this update on the internet before seeing it available on my PS3. I have the stock 80GB HDD, but I'm glad I was able to avoid it entirely.

Playstation updates are always hit and miss. For those who are making the switch, Sony isn't just unicorns and rainbows.

And wouldn't you know it, I have a third party 500 GB drive. I'm praying to Jebus that my PS+ didn't automatically download the update.
