Back in 1999 Homeworld was as much a staple to the PC gamer as air is to the shambling bag of bones and blood we carry around each day. It was a mecha for those who could lose themselves for hours in space-fleet management, resource gathering and the execution of large-scale space battles. For the time it was huge in both scope and design, harboring both a graphical engine and musical soundtrack leagues ahead of where most game were. Of course, Homeworld came at a time when the tide itself was turning. Half Life had come out only a year previously and developers were learning how to translate bigger -more radical- visions into beautiful ones and zeroes.

After the release of Homeworld 2 in 2003 the some of the original developers left Relic to create Blackbird Interactive and have recently shown off concept art for their new game, Hardware.

Only concept art and a short trailer has been shown (below) but scant details have been leaking out. The story of Hardware revolves around a mysterious dead planet that harbors shipwrecks from around the galaxy -like a space Bermuda Triangle- and the interstellar corporation, Long March Industries, tasked with procuring the resources from it.

As of now it seems Hardware will primarily be a PC and iOS release with the possibility of it appearing on consoles dependent on the titles popularity, and even though we know little else the pedigree involved with this title means that I'll be watching it like a fox.

Do I think this will be a return to mainstream Space-sims? No. I'm not insane.

Homeworld was a great RTS game of its time. However, with other similar RTS game like Sins of a Solar Empire, the devs need to make Hardware really stand out.

It seemed like Rise of the Triad was going to be the only new game I was looking forward to. I'll have to keep my eye on this.

Don't get your hopes too high about F2P, social RTS. This is no Homeworld 3.

    From Polygon article:

"Since ownership of small pieces of territory on a planet populated by other players means that players' relationships are key to one another, Hardware is somewhat of a "social strategy game." Indeed, Blackbird's chief technological officer Yossarian King says in a Gamasutra editorial that the devs "wanted to launch on social networks like Facebook, and then move onto mobile platforms including iPhone and Android, but tablets looked pretty good too, and a standalone PC build for Steam distribution also made sense." He also said the game could come to consoles if it was successful on its other platforms."
