Well here's something I never would have expected. It seems that in the most recent THQ back catalog auction round, the Homeworld IP (which of course contains both Homeworld 1 and Homeworld 2) was purchased by Sega and Gearbox Software.
Originally developed by Relic Entertainment, Homeworld was a breakthrough space-based RTS that amassed a huge and dedicated following on PC after its release in 1999. Now, in the hands of Gearbox the original two games might be headed for a renovation and rerelease.
(Gearbox Chief Creative Officer ) "Brian [Martel] intends as first priority to direct Gearbox's interest to preserve and assemble the purest form of the original acclaimed and beloved games,Homeworld and Homeworld 2, with the intent of making them accessible on today's leading digital platforms” the company released in a statement following the purchase.
Of course, had this news come out a year ago I would be pretty excited. But after the catastrophe that was Aliens: Colonial Marines my faith in Gearbox has been sullied to an incredible degree. Especially considering that Gearbox has never made anything that wasn't a first-person shooter, and God help them if they try to make the Homeworld series into one.
Within the same release the company also stated Brian Martel's “great love and respect for Relic's brilliant, fun and innovative game and [he] personally spearheaded the acquisition,"
Great love and respect for an IP? Sounds like I've heard this from Gearbox before.

Why don't they try making something truly new instead of giving the only thing that they created a re-skin sequel that's biggest contribution was making one of the most important elements of the game worse, the inventory. If the last two attempts at other people's franchises were an indication of their, "great love and respect," for things and Borderlands 2 was an example of how they seem to get lazy once they find a winning formula then I can't help but feel Gearbox are just an overrated developer because they throw out some beer and pizza at Pax.

Well...that is surprising. I wonder how much they paid for the IP?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but has Gearbox ever made a RTS game? Aren't all their games shooters?

I definitely do not feel good about this.

Wonder what team they will outsource this to?

Come on, no love for Impossible Creatures? You could make an army of hybrid animals! Flying monkeys, people! Someone make a sequel! :(
