I've written in the past about the difficulty of capturing a retro aesthetic while still utilizing contemporary tools and mechanics. The difficulty lies in finding that sweet spot which comes from intermingling the good of the past with the good of the present, and avoiding the stumbles of both in the process. What Interceptor Entertainment has realized with Rise of the Triad, is that finding that sweet spot just isn't good enough. You then must pump up the speed and framerate to the point of what I like to call “face-melting” and then add thrashing guitars on top, so that after your face is melted into a rudimentary paste who's only purpose is to support Robocop's biological functions, the game then proceeds to kick you in the crotch until you vomit from joy.

Today we have 18 minutes of ROTT multiplayer footage showcasing what I've described above, and I can tell you from first-hand experience that it's just as fun as it looks on film. Old-school blistering multiplayer running on more frames than even the most obese American could chow down in one sitting, it brings me back to playing Quake III Arena on my friends PC in 1999.

In addition to the video, Interceptor also released the -as of yet incomplete- multiplayer Roster for your perusal on their website showing a host of characters each with varying levels of speed and endurance.

Rise of the Triad will be available for PC for $14.99 IN THE FUTURE! (Seriously they haven't announced a release date yet.)

Now this the kind of multi player shooter I want to see more of. Hopefully after ROTT Interceptor will work on modernising other classic FPS shooters.

I have been excited for this game since its announcement. I only wish I had a PC to play it on.
