In a response to a question by Kotaku at Epic's GDC panel earlier today, Epic Games VP and co-founder Mark Rein stated that the Unreal Engine 4 will not support Nintendo's Wii U.
So much for the Wii U being anywhere close to competitive in the next 5 years.
We have Unreal Engine 3 for the Wii U," Rein said. "And Unreal Engine 3 is powering all kinds of amazing games, still lots of games are being made with Unreal Engine 3. We announced today about a new Unreal Engine 3 license. Unreal Engine 3 doesn't disappear because of Unreal Engine 4.
"But our goal for Unreal Engine 4 console-wise is next-gen consoles. That's really what our energies are focused on. If you want to make a Wii U game, we have Unreal Engine 3, and it's powering some of the best games on the Wii U already."
And this is coming on the heels of news that Battlefield 4 won't be appearing on the Wii U because Frostbite Engine 3 -the newest iteration of the Frostbite Engine being used in BF4- won't support the Wii U either. Take into account the currently dismal state of Wii U sales, the depressing games lineup and an easily distractable consumer who is always looking for the next shiniest thing, and I'm not exactly sure where the Wii U is going to fit come the next few years.
Surely, Nintendo can kiss their dreams of keeping up with fidelity goodbye and are going to have to rely on tried and true -if not a little tired and cliché'- IP's to get them into the game. Considering that Skyward Sword was nothing more than a brief flash in the pan, I'm not even sure how much clout those hold anymore either.

PS4 does what Nintendon't.
You're right about their main IP's getting stale. The only reason Skyward Sword was a flash in the pan is that the reviews coming out were way higher than they should have been. People played it and thought "you know what, this game isn't that good..." Although the Mario Galaxy games were brilliant, the overall Mario franchise is tired, too. Pikmin 3 alone can't hope to save the console.

its not mention in this post, but its not only limited to BF4, since the next Dragon Age and Mass Effect will also use the frostbite 3 engine those games wont be coming out on wiiU either. I'm guessing most of the newest engines wont be for the wiiu as well.....its sad man, especially when nintendo was soo jazzed about the wiiU being able to get UE3 games

I kinda saw this coming, yet it makes me a little sad. I kinda hoped it would do decently. It's Nintendo doing what Nintendo does, innovating and bringing new kinds of hardware to play around with. I think it really could have done better if they developed it longer, maybe made it strong enough to compete with Microsoft and Sony's new consoles. Alas, they didn't, instead just making the same mistake with the Wii and hoping for another fluke (or just not understand that the Wii was a fluke). Not sure I even want one anymore, unless the next Mario/Metroid/Zelda/Smash Bros/Pikmin3 look particularly awesome.

Content keeps companies a float, not record sales. Been saying that since the beginning. I never gave two shits about an innovation Nintendo brought to gaming, I only cared for the great games. No good games to play of course you're going to fall, especially when the only thing supporting you is the old people who bought you console with 1 game.
