In writing about Project Shield, Nvidia's new portable gaming project, yesterday I mentioned that Vita sales have been slow which is symptomatic of a saturated handheld market. Today, Sony chief executive Kaz Hirai has admitted to as much when talking to the Wall Street Journal.
“I would say it’s on the low end of what we expected,” said Mr. Hirai. He noted, however, that it takes 5-10 years before he can say a product has been successful. He said similar questions were asked about the PlayStation 3 early in its cycle, but he now sees that console as a success. “Long term is what is important,” he said.
We all know that Sony likes to play the long game, but that's Sony. A company like Nvidia -who are used to fast turnaround on products that are released yearly- may not be so accustomed to riding out the storm. Nor may their invenstors. And keep in mind that we're not even done with CES yet, so get ready for the field to get even more crowded.

I can see Sony slowly losing their grip.

Sony just needs a defining game to sell the Vita; they're already seasoned player in the market. Nvidia on the other hand, needs to hit the ground running. My thoughts, anyway.

Sony IMO should let go of the handheld market, not because I think the vita
is bad or anything but the recent surge of cheaper simpler games on iPhone/iPad prove consumers don't want big complex games to play on the go
