I feel like I've written this post before. In fact, I'm almost certain I did just a few years ago when Halo: Reach was released. It's sort of become a little tradition of mine as I stare into the very face of hype without actually feeling any of my own. And giving yet another shot to a franchise beloved by many, but mediocre to myself.
You can blame Half-Life if you like. Valve revolutionized the FPS years before the original Halo was ever released, and while Halo did make strides for the modern FPS on consoles, I had already played what I found to be a superior shooter...and by that time was deep into the frenetic waves of Team Fortress.
Halo's claws just never sunk into me. PC gaming was my home at the time and Half Life was king eternal.
Halo has always seemed a more console-centric experience, and the fact that Halo 4 won't be coming to PC's at all this time around surely backs this up. But I'm long gone from PC gaming now -albeit for the older titles I play during Way Back Wednesday- and consoles are my current home. Still...the idea of Halo being a 'big thing' just doesn't connect with me.
I went through this same dilemma when Reach was released, and though I found myself enjoying the single player campaign more than I expected, I found the multiplayer experience excessively dry in comparison with today's current offering. Some have told me that Reach's MP just wasn't that good to begin with...I'll take their word for it.
But here I go again, later today, to give it another go. Maybe this time I'll see some of that magic which made most stand in long lines at midnight last night. To post incessantly about Cortana and the big ol' Master Chief. (Again...another dynamic I've always found as flavorful as drywall.)
Maybe this time the mutliplayer will pull me in, maybe it will be dynamic, frenetic -ugh- visceral -ugh- and all of the other overused adjectives that slime their way through every PR release and review ever written.
Or maybe I'll just play it, experience it, and move on.

If you can do a whole community night for Halo 4 custom games... this game can become really fun. I remember the days of Halo 3 Custom Games with Juan... good times.

I've always just seen Halo as a decent shooter with a fantastic soundtrack. The most fun I've had with the franchise is when I'm goofing around in campaign or online with friends. Hammer and sword only battles with 200% speed and low gravity all the way.
