Good news for space game fans. Chris Roberts new space extravaganza has now blown past its kickstarter goal with still 26 days to go.

So far the game is funded with $517,716 toward its development, but with so much time let I wouldn't be surprised if that number increased a few fold over the next few weeks. And I hope it does. Developing games is an expensive and lengthy process, and 500k certainly doesn't go as far as it used to. Especially when attempting to make something as grand as we see in the trailer below. Luckily the game is already getting a head start, having already been in production for about a year at Roberts LA based studio.

For those still unaware, Chris Roberts is the creator of the Wing Commander series which became the standard bearer of space sim games back in the 90's. Games like HomeWorld and Colony Wars took nods from this masterpiece before the space sim genre mysteriously fell off the face of the earth...no pun intended. It has existed mostly in the indie realm as of late, not counting EVE Online of course, but a good showing for Star Citizen could turn the interest of the larger development studios and possibly raise this genre from the proverbial ashes.

The kickstarter came into place when their original crowd-sourcing site's server crashed. But even now that has also been replaced. While the kickstarter went over 100%, the asking two million dollars has not yet been reached according to this:

I'm not 100% sure but I don't know if they have combined the earned money together since the kickstarter reached its goal.

This is awesome. I really wanted to see another Privateer game, but this surely will do if it's by a designer of Wing Commander.
I'm not sure how influential was Wing Commander when it comes to Home World. After all, HW is an RTS and the only real similarity is space. Freelancer on another hand is basically Privateer/Wing Commander game and it was damn good. I still don't understand why Microsoft Studios never made a second game.
