It had been reported awhile ago that G4 was going through a bit of a metamorphoses. Its gaming programming had been lackluster as of late, with reruns of COPS seeming to take center stage over anything pixel related, but there were still a few shining stars like X-Play and Attack of the Show to give gamers something to look forward to.

Now G4 has announced that as part of this continuing metamorphoses ALL of it's gaming programming will be canceled with Attack of the Show and X-Play running through to the end of the year and nixed after that.

Here is the official statement from G4:

G4's two longest-running and defining series, Attack of the Show! and X-Play, will be ending their run at the end of 2012. Both shows will include original episodes through the end of the year, and will look back at theirmost memorable moments as we lead up to their final episodes. A rotating lineup of guest co-hosts including John Barrowman, Michael Ian Black, Josh Myers, Paul Scheer, Rob Huebel and Horatio Sanz will join AOTS hosts Candace Bailey and Sara Underwood, and X-Play hosts Morgan Webb and Blair Herter as part of the farewell shows. With well over a thousand episodes each, Attack of the Show! and X-Play have defined gamer culture for a generation, serving as the launch pad for prominent personalities including Kevin Pereira, Olivia Munn, Chris Hardwick and Adam Sessler. Attack of the Show! debuted March 28, 2005 and from the start was the ultimate guide to everything cool and new in the world of technology, web culture, gaming and pop culture. X-Play made its debut almost two years earlier, on April 28, 2003 (on G4's previous incarnation: TechTV), and immediately became the go-to destination for young men seeking the latest video game news, honest reviews, hands-on demos and exclusive video game trailers and footage. The year-end celebration will take you back through highlights of these landmark shows' history, including its exclusive live-from-the-floor coverage of San Diego Comic-Con and E3.Both long-running shows helped define, as well as expand, the pop culture and gaming TV experience for a generation. We hope you've had as much fun watching them as we have had making them, and sincerely hope you join us in bidding a fond farewell to Attack of the Show and X-Play's as we look back over the next two months and head towards each series' finale.

But though you might not find gaming programs on G4 anymore, there is an additional change happening. Gaming shows on streaming channels like Twitch.tv, and now Youtube's live offering, have been making a surge. Destructoid now has a show of their own through those services and we here at 4Player have been moving in the direction of providing more show-like content this past year. In essence, G4 has become obsolete in this age of DIY streaming media. And one could argue that the gamer provided content has been even better than what G4 has been providing for awhile now.

We just don't get a fancy stage at E3.

I am a little sad to see them go to be honest, I was around when G4 first started up so seeing it stop being a channel about gaming is not very pleasant. Then again I've had to get use to anime blocks going away because of the internet so its not really surprising. Why watch a TV channel about video games when you have all the news you can get on the net as it pretty much happens.

And TV continues to become a soulless grey blob of unfocused samey shit.

Cant say im surprised... I remember when they first came on and it was great, started visibly going downhill relatively quickly though. Havent liked the programming on g4 for quite a while now though. At least theyre no longer going to desperately/awkwardly push the 'gamer' demo...

Good night sweet prince, its sad to see G4 go. Even if X-play and ATOS have been complete jokes over the last few years.

Honestly I think we could all see this coming from a mile way with G4 becoming the COPS re run channel. With an occasional smidgen of gaming content mixed in. It's sad considering how good of a channel it used to be years ago.

All the more reason to not miss my cable TV. Not that I like watching Cops or Cheaters anyway.

Stopped watching the channel long ago. I enjoyed TechTv, tolerated G4-TechTv, then gave up entirely when it shifted into the mess that it has been for years now. Content that has zero appeal to me whatsoever, including Cops, Cheaters, Ninja Warrior, etc. Now that I think of it, television in general has almost zero appeal to me. Times change.

I bet G4's gonna cut E3 coverage next just because they don't like games anymore. Honestly, I learn more about games with like 5 minutes of this streaming thing than I ever did from any of watching G4.

Welp, there is yet another incentive for me not to watch the television. What a shame.

I knew that by the end of 2012 TV would become worthless. I could tell by all the soulless crap shows that have been getting pumped out. At least I can still watch Gravity Falls and Motor City.

Anyways, I've tuned in to TechTV way before G4 merged with them. The TechTV-G4 transition was actually great. There were a lot of gaming programs that I actually enjoyed watching. It wasn't until G4 made an overhaul with their programming that made me stop watching. I did come back to watch Screen Savers which then turned into AOTS. Though AOTS became uninteresting in its later days. This comes to me as a no surprise since
the channel lacked identity, imo. The only thing that upsets me is that there will be no more televised E3 coverage. I actually enjoy watching their E3 coverage, its probably the only time of the year I actually go and watch G4. Other than that, there's really nothing else.

Eh, G4 shows stopped being funny and became obnoxious a while ago. Can't say I'm very sad about this.

Well XPlay was one of the reasons why I got into gaming. Sad but if anything can be said about people who left G4 is that they still are respected and do well, Patrick Klepek, Seanbaby, Abbie Heppe, Adam Sessler to name a few.

I hardly blame the internet for their demise. It's been quite some years of bad TV.
