There has been a lot of conjecture about what form DayZ would finally take as it proceeded in development. Would it break away from Bohemia Interactive and become its own release? Or would it come as a mode of Arma III and available through the in-game menus?
Well today Bohemia Interactive announced that they will be funding and releasing DayZ as its own standalone game.
Dean Hall, creator of DayZ, will be heading up the project which will be developed in parallel with support for the current mod.
"Development and updates of the mod will continue in parallel with the development of the game, so anyone who is playing the mod now will be able to continue to do so. The project will follow the Minecraft development model; fast iterations with the community alpha available for a heavily discounted price." Dean Hall stated on the now official DayZ website.
This is all happening as users of DayZ have recently surpassed the 1 million mark which, to put things in perspective, is now more users that Star Wars: The Old Republic can boast. It also comes as another game of the same ilk, The WarZ, is also in production, and in a position to threaten those very same high user-numbers if it manages to release first with a higher production quality.

It will be using Arma III's engine of course and might possibly release somewhere around Arma 3's release as well.
It should go without saying but some people seem to misinterpret what they mean by the Minecraft model. The DayZ stand alone WILL require a separate purchase of it, regardless if you bought Arma 2 for DayZ. They're just going to follow Minecraft's example and release a pre-release version for cheap, then the full release will be full price.

this really can't come soon enough. i'd much rather wait and buy this as a standalone but a solid release date would be nice

Tbh no surprises here really but I question the logic of Bohemia Interactive since this means Arma 3 won't sell very well.
