4pp, 4player, Motorstorm: pacific Rift server shutdown

If you enjoy the multiplayer component of Motorstorm: Pacific RiftMotorStorm:  Arctic Edge and SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3,  you might want to try and get some quality play-time in soon.  UK PlayStation has issued an alert that the MP servers for these games will be shut down on October 1st.

As of right now it's unclear if this is going to affect gamers worldwide or just in the UK, but it looks like, at least, the land of Chimney Sweeps and Orphans will no longer have a hearty game of Pacific Rift to find solace in.

For some reason it seems like this is happening faster and faster these days, and the absence of local server capability for these games means that gamers are at the whim of the publisher when it comes to the big on/off switch that the servers are connected to. Plus, the contemporary need for all games published today to have a multiplayer component is also probably taking a big chunk of server real estate that could have otherwise been used to keep older games running longer.

A big boon for PC games that allow for local multiplayer games to be created? Sure. I can probably still find a game of Soldier of Fortune II  to mess around in, and putting the server into the hands of the players certainly adds to the longevity of a title.

It'll be sad to see Pacific Rift go, since that's a game I was practically obsessed with a few years ago. Luckily the single player portion of that game can certainly hold its own, but there is nothing like playing against real people.

Goodbye old friend.

I find it strange that companies are decommissioning servers for games that are a part of the *current* console generation. I guess we have no precedent to follow considering that the last generation was the first consistent platform to have online servers. But a while back it seemed like it was just PS2 and XBox titles that were getting their servers unplugged. It's a sad day indeed and is going to make playing those older, more online focused titles entirely fruitless.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they started turning off multiplayer servers for titles such as BF3 and MW3 when the next gen consoles come out in order to drive consumers towards purchasing the sequels.

They will start turning off BF3 servers when BF4 comes out, Bob. This is such a BS and a sad part is, everyne is more or less OK with that like it's a norm now. There is no reason for Xbox not be able to host private online servers, at least no technical reasons. I can still host Quake 1 DM server on my PC with no problem, but even PCs are starting to get fucked now. For example I can't host a private BF3 server and have to pay for dedicated which is BS.

I can only see this as getting worse and worse for gaming as a whole.
