By now you may have heard that Microsoft has officially announced a new installment to the wildly popular Gears of War series. Subtitled "Judgment", the new game is a prequel to the original trilogy and follows the adventures of Kilo squad, led by series mainstays Damon Baird and Augustus Cole. Not much in the way of story details have been released yet, but what we do know is that Kilo squad will find themselves on trial for some yet unspecified act of heroics. The game play in Judgment will likely be very similar, if not identical, to the rest of the Gears games, with one notable addition; a new multiplayer mode dubbed "OverRun". The new game type will feature COG versus Locust objective based game play, with the COGs defending a Hammer of Dawn beacon while simultaneously trying to stop Locust player from opening two sealed Emergence Holes on the map.In another first for the series, OverRun will also be class-based, with unique classes represented on both sides of the fight. COG players will be able to choose between a Soldier, Engineer, Medic, or Scout while Locust players get the Bloodmount, Corpser, Grenadier, Kantus, Mauler, Serapede, Ticker, and Wretch.
Now, don't get me wrong, I love Gears of War, but I can't help but think it seems a bit soon to be releasing another one. I just barely finished the original trilogy, and now its time to start in on prequel territory? On the other hand, Baird is my personal favorite character of the series, so it'll be nice to see him take point. I just hope his dynamic with Cole doesn't end up becoming a rehash of Marcus/Dom. It's also worth mentioning that Epic seems to be taking a back seat on Judgment and are handing the reigns over to People Can Fly, co-developer of 2011's Bulletstorm, so take that for what it's worth. To be honest, this one's still up in the air for me, but I'll certainly be keeping an eye on it.
Gears of War Judgment is scheduled for release sometime in 2013 for the Xbox 360.

Oh, Microsoft.. what are you going to do when your stale franchises can no longer be milked? I can't wait for that day, just so I can watch them flounder in their own failure.

Looks just as stale and boring as the other entries in this overrated series IMO.
