I never had any doubts that Minecraft would do well on Xbox Live Arcade, but  I didn't think it would have done this well, this fast. Perhaps I felt that everyone who would have played the game already had it for PC, leaving only a smaller market of neophytes and curious elders.

Apparently this is not the case.

Minecraft, which was released just 5 days ago has sold more than 1 million copies.  Not only that, but the playtime stats for the arcade title are just as staggering and include,

    • 5.2 million total online hours spent mining;
    • 4 million total multiplayer sessions played; and
    • 2.4 million multiplayer gaming hours played.

And you can add my bucketload of hours from over the weekend to that total as well. There is something just so meditative about sitting on a big comfy couch, with 5.1 surround sound, mining away and building to your hearts content. I call it Comfy-Mincraft and I think it's going to be the only way I play from now on. Sure there may be some missing elements from the Arcade title, but it's not far off and only a few patches away from matching its PC counterpart in gameplay elements. Just as long as you don't mind the lack of dedicated servers.
