When Assassin's Creed: Revelations released something started to happen. Fans of the series, even the loyal ones, began to tire of the almost indistinguishable settings and began taking to the internet to theorize, or perhaps dream longingly, of where the next game -the true sequel- should take place. We've all heard them thrown around and, as you know I even had my own personal favorite (Industrial Revolution London).  The three most popular though, according to Alex Hutchinson, creative director of Assassin's Creed 3, were WWII, feudal Japan and Egypt.

Unfortunately for you, he hates them all.

"People on the internet suggest the most boring settings," Hutchinson said while talking to OXM. "The three most wanted are WWII, feudal Japan and Egypt. They're kind of the three worst settings for an AC game....[Assassin's Creed 3 writer Corey May] really wants to do India. I would too. I'd really love to do the Raj."

Ok...hold on a moment. I certainly can understand not wanting to do World War II. Not only is that setting overdone already, it would be technically wrong for the series. Many WWII battles occurred over long stretches of war-torn earth with a smattering of cities in-between. Is the Assassin to jump from tank to tank, or clutch to the underbelly of a B-52? I'm with him there.

But Egypt is wrong? Because....ancient structures simply didn't work for Tomb Raider or Uncharted. The only reason I can see Egypt not working is because people -and I would imagine even some developers within Ubisoft- were clamoring for something completely different. Something somewhat modern to get the series out of the funk it was slowly falling into.

Feudal Japan would have been interesting as well, and with the quality of housing and the amount of...shrubbery...perhaps not all that different from the American Revolution setting that was finally settled on.

I guess my main gripe is the inclusion of India as a possibility. Though India certainly has an interesting history, and an even more colorful theology, aesthetically I can't see it being different enough from what they have been doing all along.  And for a creative director to be sliding back into the 'comfortable box' rather than trying to think outside of it doesn't bode well for the series as a whole.

We shall see. Assassins's Creed III changing enough for me to take another look at the series, and I'm hoping that this is the one to pull me in for good. All I ask is that the series continue to move forward, not retreat back into familiar habits.

I would love to see a sequel take place in Egypt but I do like the direction they have chose to go. I would just love to see Egypt used as a setting in an open-world action game in general. It doesn't even need to be Assassin's Creed.

I actually agree with him. Feudal Japan and WWII have just been done so fucking much in other games. Egypt is a bit cliche when you consider all the ruin hunting the player does. But AC has been unique in its setting from the get-go. Syria? Come one. Then Renaissance Italy? Then Constantinople? I just think Feudal Japan would have just become a "Oh, so you're like a ninja" and I don't even see how WWII would have worked. Egypt, I don't know.

India, I think, would have been pretty cool. It's something you don't see in video games. But I'm completely okay with them doing it in USA.

Wait, how would jumping from rooftop to rooftop in Berlin be tired and overdone? or through Stalingrad as the battle for that city progressed from start to finish? (imagine revisiting areas of the city but clutching onto rubble instead of a window) how would eliminating higher and higher ranked officials (On BOTH sides) or running with or against partisan/underground groups be the same as playing another COD? I thought that would have been neat. WW2 doesn't just mean Kursk and Omaha...

I've been hoping for Feudal Japan since the beginning. So many possibilities with that setting.

The community also has to bear in mind that the games are largely based on the Assassins War with the Templars, who were/are a largely christian/catholic religion, you have to look for places that had those types of religious influences, and would make sense for a Templar Presence.

I don't think he likes the idea of helping the Nazi by killing the Allied higher up officials. Also, as a half Indian, it would be cool to see the setting in India; seeing and running around old Indian infrastructures sound interesting.

First I've heard of this WW2 thing. Why the hell would people ask for WW2 in AC? WW2 was fought with guns and ONLY guns (well 90% guns, including artillery, bombs, etc). How the hell would that work? I'm with him there.

But Egypt? Like you said Joseph, that's certainly not a bad idea. It would seem interesting, going through the desert regions as an assassin. And Feudal Japan? Really? That's boring and would be construed as one of the "worst" ideas? Come now.... NINJAS SIR. NINJAS! Not to mention that Ninjas were historically known to make getaways on the rooftops of houses after assassinations or other plots! Playing as a Ninja in AC would be so damn awesome. Sure its overdone, but cmon. Ninjas.

Personally, I'd be more interested in a pre-Soviet Russia as a setting for one of these games over Feudal Japan. Or even Mongolia/China over India.

I'm disappointed by no mention of a Vietnam setting.
