Not content with allowing the Baldursgate.com countdown to simply lead to a server crash, which it hilariously did, Atari has now released information as to what the countdown was actually for.

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition is currently a -wait for it- enhanced edition of both the original Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, and is in development over at Overhaul Games, the dev studio working for proprietary PC download service Beamdog who also are responsible for the HD re-releases of MDK and MDK2. Beamdog's Trent Oster has revealed through his Twitter account (since the Baldur's Gate servers are currently being massaged and lubed up by large Samoan men) that the new edition will include overhauled graphics and new content provided by some of the original Baldur's Gate team.

If you haven't yet heard of Beamdog now might be a good time to acquaint yourself, but there is a possibility of other platform announcements in the near future. In any case, this will be a great way for some of us to go back to a great series that molded some of our early gaming years, and for new players to be introduced to the series in a new and shiny state.

Fantastic news. This game was a little before my time, so I'm glad i'll have an excuse to finally play it.

Meant to get into the BG series for a while, now looks like a good time to do so.
