We've posted about the cancellation of Gotham By Gaslight before. It's the since axed Steampunk themed Batman game that was being developed by Day 1 Studios, the fellas behind F.3.A.R., and was going to feature  the Caped Crusader hunting down classic London based villains using things with lots of gears in them, and buying overpriced used pistons at conventions. Ok, maybe I'm making up that last part, but it was looking to be an interested title before it was shut down.

Now, a source at Day 1 Studios has leaked some prototype animation footage of the game to give us a better look at what once was. Most of this footage seems to have been used to show off the cape and gravity animations, but we also get a good idea of the new look they were giving to the Batman character, as well as some of the environments.

Sadly, Gotham By Gaslight never made it much farther than what we're seeing here.

That cape animation and physics are a beautiful thing. (Though for some reason I kept having the fear that it would go TWANG! across the screen..not sure why..)
Sad for Batman fans though & others who were excited for this game!

More games need to have super awesome cape physics. They also missed out on a great opportunity to sell collectors editions which include an overly elaborate cape and utility belt. As for the second, cape-less sequence, were those a bunch of knives on his belt, or... stakes? Could Batman have been a vampire hunter? *gasp* He could have joined forces with Abe Lincoln in that sweet Steampunk world.

It did seem pretty cool. Too bad we won't see a loony man walking across rooftops beating up ruffians and what not.

I liked Batman's costume for this. It looked cool. I still don't quite understand why people are so insistent on making Batman look like a hulking mountain of muscle though. I understand Bruce Wayne is a pretty buff guy and all, but there's a little too much muscle mass there I think. Would have been cool to see this game come to light though.

Wow. I thought I wouldn't care for the cape physics, but dear God that is beautiful...

I'm not paying attention to the cape as much as how out of place Batman looks. It looks like the only change he has from a look perspective is an extra layer on the cape, and then it's 21st century Batman everywhere else.

I feel a little fatigued on Steampunk. It seems like too easy a go-to when people want to mix up the fiction of a franchise a bit.
Still, this game could have been interesting it's own right. Steampunk aside, I think a Victorian-era Batman, with lamplight and fog, along would have some absolutely fantastic merit and ideas.

And need I say, that CAPE. Absolutely gorgeous! As funny as it sounds, I really hope we see cape technology like this in the future. If they add something thast looks like that to whatever the next 'Souls' game is, for example, I will be in heaven!

Totally agree with you guys. This is the BEST 3D cape I've ever seen in my entire life. I wonder why they cancel this game. Its such a waste a lot of their time to make this game in a first place then. Damn :'(.
