CCP has announced that they are now allowing people to sign-up for the beta of their PS3 EVE Online shooter hybrid, Dust 514.

In a post put up on the Eve Online website shortly before Christmas, CCP_CmdrWang wrote:

For months we have observed as fans asked for a Beta date on DUST 514, our PlayStation® 3 exclusive persistent shooter. During that time the DUST 514 team has worked busily on the game, preparing for the moment when the first inhabitants of New Eden descend from the skies to the planets below.

That time is now.

It is with great joy that I can now officially announce that registration for DUST 514: Mordu’s Private Trials, our gated access beta test, has finally begun!

For now, registration is available exclusively to active subscribers of EVE Online who will join the pool of participants that we will be using to allow entry into early testing and special events for DUST 514. Registration for Mordu’s Private Trials does not guarantee entry, but as an active EVE subscriber, you are the first to have access to sign up for the closed beta.

We’re hugely excited to be able to extend this exclusive opportunity to our player community.

I, for one, am pretty excited. Dust 514 is setup within the same universe as CCP's MMO Eve Online, and actions of the players in the PS3 game will influence its MMO counterpart...and vice-versa. It will also serve to expand a world rich in ethos that many people have found hard to get into due, in part, by the steep learning curve which Eve Online is now famous for.

At the moment, Dust 514 is a PlayStation exclusive and currently there are no plans to bring it to other platforms.

You can check out our preview of Dust 514 here, and quite awhile ago I wrote about the importance of such a game here.

Eve is my favorite MMO to read about. I played it for about a month, had a lot of fun with it, got attacked and lost everything I owned. That kinda killed it for me.

    Also, isn't is Vice-versa? #nitpickcorrections

EVE is what the old style of MMOGs were. Not easy to get into, niche, and with many stories just like DainLidra's. Games like EVE just work better outside of the MMOG format. While not perfect, X3 is a better game in the space sandbox genre. Even if you are a EVE fan, there is no denying that EVE isn't for everyone.

Damn man, I'm tempting to buy a PS3 with this game on the horizon. Ever since I heard of it, and after experiencing the galore that EVE Online had to offer, I knew DUST 514 was going to be pretty awesome.

It's just the prospect of contributing to the EVE universe without actually dealing with the extremely low learning curve of the actual game.. boggles my mind, man.

Didn't they say it was cancelled a shile back?
If not well, I'm not interested in this kind of game, but I salute what they are trying to do with this, good luck.

As a 2-year EVE player (not a vet but not a newbie either) I'm damn excited about this. I just got my account signed up for Beta Access a moment ago so fingers crossed I get the chance at this. I'm very excited to see just what DUST brings to the table of the EVE Universe :)
