Always painful to report, it seems that another rash of layoffs have been hitting game companies again. This time CCP and 2K Marin have been caught in the layoff crosshairs.
CCP is in the process of laying off 20% of its staff, with most layoffs focusing on their Atlanta, Georgia offices. Statements from CCP allude to a company feeling the stretch of developing EVE Online, First-Person shooter Dust 514, and a new MMO called World of Darkness. CCP states that they are ending major development of World of Darkness to focus more on Eve Online, their current cash cow.
2K Marin seems to be a casulity of the development problems happening in Australia, where mutliple layoffs and studio closures have been the norm. 2K has refused to comment on the layoffs.
It's a sad thing to see, and perhaps part of the current landscape of gaming development. The large players, having taken up much of the market, aren't leaving smaller studios with very much breathing room. And it's well known that unless you have a hit on your hands on the first try, there is a possibility that your studio won't be around very long for a second.
Then you have Team Bondi, who had a hit and wrecked themselves through awful management anyway.
Let's keep these lost souls in our mind, and remember to buy the games that you love.

I always hope for those who got laid off to have their shining moments in other studios. Still sad to hear this going on.

How saddening to see these game developers get shut down. They seem to have the potential, but not the financial luck. :|
Also, I wonder how this might effect 2KMarin's development on that XCOM reboot...

When will gaming companies stop making mere FPS's?
XCOM was destined to fail as it has become a generic shooter...
they should've stuck with a tactical/strategy game..
Sad for the workers there.. but im not sad this game has been dealt another blow..
It shouldn't be associated with X-COM.
