Rumors have been floating around about a right circle pad attachment for the 3DS since that Nintendo kerfuffle a few weeks ago. You know, the one where they lowered the price of the unit, apologized to everyone and decided that they would be making some big changes in an attempt to pickup sales?
One of those changes Nintendo was rumored to be making was the addition of a right circle pad attachment for the 3DS. The idea sounded preposterous at the time...but oh how the wheel turns. Well, we're finding out now through the above leaked Famitsu article that it's very real.
Look at it. Monstrous! The attachment will provide you with three additional shoulder buttons as well as that second stick. It will also render the unit a little more inconvenient to carry around as well. Let's just hope this is the beginning and the end of the 3DS attachments, lest it become the new Sega 32x.
Oh Nintendo...is there anything you won't try?

They did it with the Classic Controller for the Wii also, and that time it was also because of a Monster Hunter game, you'd think that Nintendo would understand the hints that Capcom tries to give them by telling them that their controllers lack buttons :p

Well that's fine if you bought the 3DS as a Monster Hunter Playing Device, but I can't see many developers designing games to even so much as allow you to use this for alternative control schemes.

With something as large as that, is there something in there that boosts the battery life as well?
I personally don't mind this if it is not some sort of egregious price. Rumors were $10 and that is more than fair for a new depth of control and three more buttons. However its stuff like this that just makes me think why not include this in the original design? Is it really that hard to consider the need for this stuff up front?
I haven't purchased a 3ds as of yet and honestly I still have a wait and see attitude on the idea. Same goes for the Vita. As someone who's primary source of gaming the last year or so has been from handheld devices, I can't say I'm very excited about either prospect at this point.

Lolol Nintendo is always the leader of weird ass peripherals. Jesus christ... My front pocket will look even more awkward with that stupid attachment!

Well that's not awkward or anything...at least it fixes a problem that really needed to be fixed, just not in the best manner, I suppose.

To be honest, I don't really see what everyone's problem is. Sure it looks pretty terrible, but I would bet that every gaming console and handheld has had some ugly looking and / or stupid peripheral (the Game Trak and the Game Boat spring to mind). Not many of them were first-party made however (if this thing is being made by Nintendo themselves), so it could be unique in that respect.
It's clear that Nintendo wanted to get into the Monster Hunter market, presumably to try and get people to actually play their 3DS' (especially in Japan), and this is perhaps the best way for them. And because of that, I can only guess that its going to be a lot bigger, and a lot more technical than the PSP ones, which required the same amount of buttons and analog sticks. I guess this is their attempt to steal all the monster hunter fans, A HUGE market in Japan, and keep them before the Vita and its version.
And also, if Sony offered me something like this when the PSP first came out, I wouldn't of said no.

Good god...Can we still call that a handheld?! It's so big!!! XD
Nintendo...The 3DS is not working not because of the hardware, rather it's the software. Fix it!

Goddamn it Nintendo, its shit like this.

The whole 3ds situation is so bizarre. Nintendo is handling all of this quite strangely.

Saw it coming.

Imagine someone at Nintendo when designing 3DS said "Yeah, 1 circle pad is definitely enough." ಠ_ಠ

I dont understand why companies are so secretive about their products before they launch. If they just said to the public "hey we are going to make a handheld do you think 1 circle pad will be enough". I imagine 95% of people will say not it wont because it was horrible on the psp so why would only having one me better on the 3DS. Less people would complain about their hardware /games if devs just asked the public what they want.
i know they do surveys but only a few hundred ever hear about them or get the oppurtunity to answer one of them

this is only trying to get the monster hunter crowd happy. I seriously doubt anyone would choose the 3DS and this attachment over the ps vita and its built in thumb sticks....I mean it goes to show how little thought went into making the 3DS...and this will only piss ppl off more once they announce they new redesign of the 3DS with a second circle pad (ugh) built in...which is pretty much guaranteed.

Lets see, If it improves the battery Life, and Helps with games like Monster Hunter, and any other 3D/ (Not as in Eye popping, but like Modern games.) But if it improves the hardware I'll be happy, as long as the 10$ thing is True. I won't pay over 30 for a D pad, or more shoulder buttons.

I'm sorry, but this thing looks stupid. Just another case of Nintendo adding on something later that should have been including in the original. *COUGH*WIIMOTIONPLUS*COUGH*
