Speaking at New York's City's Citi 2011 Conference earlier today, Activision CFO Thomas Tippl admitted that the Guitar Hero's demise occured, in part, due to a lack of attention and care by Activision themselves. (In related news: The Earth revolves around the Sun.)

"Guitar Hero probably didn't receive the amount of nurturing and care that it needed to maintain that position, and I think there were a number of good lessons to be learned." He said. "There were a number of elements to the franchise, as well as our relationship with the providers of the music, that didn't make it conducive to make the digital transition."

Though one can point to many reasons for Guitar Hero's eventual demise, we can definitely put both an over-saturation of the market, and a lack of ingenuity of new releases at the top of that list. And while Activision for their part say they have learned lessons from the experience, one cannot help to worry that other Franchises who are now on a yearly release schedule may suffer the same fate.

It would probably best for other publishers who have now incorporated hurried releases, in part to compete with the torrent of games from Activision's coffers, to heed the warning.

    Bull-fucking-shit.

Right. Like I'm just gonna believe Activision has learned from driving Guitar Hero into the ground. That sort of move is planned out and was done knowing the series would die eventually. You cannot market music games as products; not like Activision did. Otherwise, you end up with a dead series and the loss of an overall talented studio. I still fucking hate you, Activision.

    Guitar Hero didn´t die...
they killed because they don´t want to waste time with other games...
they need some more time to think how to steal money out of the Call of Duty´s nerd-fanboys´ pockets...
    No use denying it Activision.

It's their way of saying that they did not exploit the franchise far enough. I think THAT is the lesson they have learned.

"...I think there were a number of good lessons to be learned.”

Activision is delusional, plain and simple. Learned their lesson? Who are they trying to kid? It's their motto for crying out loud.
