Sony has recently announced, during their press conference at GamesCom this afternoon, a new price drop for the PS3 down to $249 dollars. For a system that first entered the market at a blinding $600, this markdown of over 50% is quite remarkable and, I think, is reflective of more than a simple downgrade of manufacturing costs.  If the console war wasn't bloody before, Sony just attached their bayonets.

The main battle being fought over at the moment is living room space, or rather, the center of your entertainment experience and each of the major game companies have had their own problems delivering fully. Nintendo, an entertainment name brand for decades, has had problems delivering on online capability, and found themselves unable to compete with the new HD entertainment experience. Microsoft, has struggled with being a 'hardcore' only system who was the center of the gamer's entertainment system...not the family(something they have tried to solve, some would say unsuccessfully, with the kinect). And the PS3, though sharing that perceived problem of accessibility that Microsoft has faced, had one major hurdle that stymied its flow from the very beginning. Price.

Now, all that is changed. At the moment a PS3 costs as much as a Nintendo 3DS did when it was first released. That, to me, is fairly amazing and shows that Sony is now serious in generating an even bigger install base than they have previously seen. In short, they do need it. In US Sales, Microsoft has been a leader in selling systems due to a low install price and an expansion  into television and general media. The PS3 is now in a position to follow suit, especially if they continue on utilizing direct compatibility with their handhelds (Transferring anyone?) and expanding upon their social hub which should be coming in the next iterations of the PlayStation Network.

It'll be interesting to watch how the sales numbers are affected by this move, especially since they have come at a prime time to position Sony for a strong showing during the holidays.

Does this mean the the PSVita is going to cost more than a PS3 when it is released?

I just bought a PS3 a few months ago, though I only have a few games on it (somehow I don't have any money, like everyone else). The 50 dollars isn't that much of a sting, though.

Also, there's a duplicate "into" in the third paragraph.

Its a good thing since I want a ps3 and seeing the price drop makes me feel closer on getting my hands on a good ol' copy of Demon's Souls.

This is good news. The only problem I have now is that Vita should be 50$ dollar cheaper. Vita is as expensive as a ps3 :C NEED MOAR MONEY!

I'm sure this will grab some attention from gamers around the world, whether they have a PS3 or not. Absolutely agree on the weakness of the PS3. Don't think this will be enough to compete with the pricing of the 360, but it's still nice to see the price drop. I don't think this will mean that a significant number of 360 owners will move to the PS3.

Meaningless. They've been $250 for a while when you consider all the $50 gift card promotions. Also, Amazon had a lightning deal for the 160GB Slim @ $200 a couple months back.

Sony should have dropped it to $200, I don't think a $50 drop will make much difference unless it's bundled with something substantial.

Is this price drop likely to come across the pond to the UK?

Goddamnit, now I really want a PS3. Of course it's not just the console. The prices of the games themselves can really kill you after a while. It's tempting, though.

    In short, I need a job. :P

Well my guess is that it'll improve sales slightly, and for those people that waited this long I think now is the time to get one.

I knew this was going to happen. My original phat 60gb PS3 died a month ago. My father, being the awesome gentleman that he is, gifts me a new PS3. Being a college student with limited funds, I decided to wait until the price drop to buy one myself. I told my pops about the price cut and his response was...ehh it's probably going to be just a $50 price cut. He was right. Well, time to star saving up for that Star Wars R2D2 360.

Wonder if MS going to drop their price on basic console in a month or so. Cheapest BlueRay player on NewEgg is still $100. $250 for a BlueRay system is not bad.

The PS3 has been gaining steam with every successive price drop they have done. The sales numbers over the last few years have been drawing closer to even for the two per year. The only feature that the 360 has that I truly wish the PS3 had is the party system for talking to friends while playing different games.

I have alot of friends who have just been needing that tiny nudge to get them to buy a PS3. It looks like this is gonna do the trick from the way several of them were talking to me.

Really good for them, timing it well, yes the Vita is as expensive. But it is a handheld, it's a portable console with as many if not more features as it. Some friends of mine are going to be purchasing it soon.

Great news on Sony's part. I would imagine this would encourage more and more people to buy a PS3 now. I want to see more people online on PSN! :3

When the PSvita does come out, its only natural for it to be pricey. The PS3 has been around for how long?

Considering the article about the 360 only just now shipping 1.5 mil units in Japan I think SONY is making a smart play to pick up any other people who may be on the fence. The similar pricing to the Vita makes sense also. They're marketing it as a handheld PS3 so why not match the super crazy low price that it will debut with?

I still won't be buying one but hey, my friend can get 50 bucks back for the ps3 he bough last week

How can people argue that the ps3 isn't worth it now? It's half the price of the launch and it's been 4 years so there's plenty of good games. It should make this a lot more accessible to the people on the fence. I got a launch ps3 for $600 and I've gotten my money out of it.

Sony is definatly getting ahead in the console war. The price is going down a lot and the games are coming out in force.

For a guy that basically been born with a Playstation controller in hand, I'm loving this.

$50 isn't going to set the world on fire. I expect one more big price cut to take place before they ship their next system. $200 is going to be the magic price point.

This is delicious news to me. When I heard it made me very excited. I still have my 60GB and I got it on release day. It was worth it to me to shell out 600 seeing as I'm a Sony loyal. But. Something internally broke. I can only play 3 of my PS3 games (Killzone 2, MGS4, Silent Hill 5) no PS2 games and ALL PS1 games. They wanted $200 to fix it, hopefully with the series of price drops it has gone through they will want far less. I can only hope (Vice versa I may look into the 320GB for $349...... not sure how I feel about no PS2 support though)
