Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy XIII-2 will arrive in our ungrateful North American hands in January, 2012.  The sequel takes place five years after the events of Final Fantasy XIII, and is supposed to include a more player-driven story than was seen in XIII. Director Motomu Toriyama explained  XIII-2 is "player-driven. The player actively explores the world, and events take place based on his actions. It's made to allow a lot of choices to be made by the player. Compared to XIII, we're using very few prerendered scenes; it's mostly realtime."

In fact, many of the changes in XIII-2 seem directly related to the large amount of criticism levied onto XIII by critics.  Oh yes...and more minigames.

Yoshinori Kitase has said "We'll also be upping the number of minigames. The linearity of XIII meant that there weren't a lot of extra features like that, but we're really putting a lot of different stuff into this one. It'll mark a return to the sort of vast mix of gameplay seen in previous FFs."

This might mean that I should actually get around to playing XIII.

Nah.

    That's cool. Now where is my Versus XIII release date? You know, the one they announced before this shitty sequel?

    Still having a very hard time convincing myself to complete 13, as i suppose is the case for quite a few people out there. I got 13 extremely cheap, so I'm not too disappointed. Perhaps 13-2 will receive the same treatment from me, buy cheap and get bored of it 20-some hours in.

    I haven't cared about Square Enix for the past 4 years. I didn't jump on the hype-bandwagon when 13 came out and I'm glad I didn't. There is absolutely nothing they could promise to bring me back in at this point.

    I fucking loved FF13. I don't care what anyone says! I also cried at the ending! And yes, I will buy FF13-2 first day, and sequester myself in my basement and play it and love it and... oh, screw you guys! ;_;

    The fact its coming out so soon points to rushed development.

    I hated how linear and streamlined FFXIII was in terms of story, mechanics, mini-games, charactar abilities, etc.

    However, if FFXIII-2 is anywhere close to what previous FF's (i.e. FFXII) had to offer, then it might be worth looking into. At the moment, I'm not getting this day 1, but a worthly rental at the very least.

    Sarah is the main character. I can't even conceive how they can make her interesting at all.

    I'm going to wait for this to release and for people to play it to wait and ask if FFXIII is just shit and if I should just get the sequel. (assuming it will be any better)

    American JRPGers are just as hard for the Japanese RPG formula as Japanese JRPGers are. FFXIII doesn't fit into that mold. I knew people who couldn't finish FFXIII. Glad to here this news. It backs up what I saw during E3.

    I thought FFXIII was okay, going into it I knew it was going to be linear for a while. So I just took it at face value and enjoyed it. I'm happy to hear XIII-2 will have a more traditional final fantasy layout though.
