Are you one of those people who think, "You know, I sure can use more con's in my life." If Quakecon, Blizzcon, ComicCon, both PAX's, an E3 and a GDC aren't enough for you then Activision has you covered with COD-CON! No..this is not a convention about delicious fish. It is Call of Duty: XP, a two day Call of Duty convention being held Los Angeles during labor day weekend, which portends to bring fans of the series together to "celebrate Activision's first-person shooter series."
It's also the place where Activision is set to unveil MW3's yet elusive multiplayer mode. Fans at the con will be able to try out the multiplayer and special ops mods themselves, and even compete in a tournament which carries a hefty $1 million dollar prize.
"From the high production values of our live, immersive events -- all the way to the smallest details in every design and activity -- we're pulling out all the stops to make Call of Duty XP the ultimate gathering for the global community of Call of Duty fans," said Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg. "The celebration will immerse attendees in a Call of Duty experience unlike anything they've ever seen before. Over the course of two days, gamers can trade Call of Duty war stories, experience the official unveiling of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer and the full feature functionality of Call of Duty Elite, as well as enjoy world-class entertainment and compete head-to-head for some serious cash prizes."
If you're going to be in the LA area and were thinking of going, it's going to cost you $150 dollars per ticket to get in. Yeah...it's pretty steep, but it may make you feel better to know that all proceeds are going to Call of Duty Endowment, a charity which "helps soldiers transition to civilian careers after their military service." And we all know that no one makes money off of charities. Right?
It's also safe to assume that Activision certainly sees it's COD franchise as one of the "big hitters" up there with World of Warcraft, which may fit well into their expanded online model. And as unnecessary as it may seem, it's really no more unnecessary than Blizzcon, which, for years, has been asking attendees to pay $150 for what really amounts to a two day commercial for Blizzard products. People will go to this event, we will wonder why, and as it's happening we'll all decide that it's probably a lot more fun than the dumb barbecue we ended up at.

Hey Joseph I noticed a spelling mistake.
"It is Call of Duty: XP, a two day Call of Duty convention"
I think its meant to say 'frat party' not 'convention'

Awesome, now they just need to make conventions for all of the other social groups I don't want to associate with and I'll be set!
There is a saturation point for the number of conventions people are willing to go to in a single year, so one will have to decide which cons are most important according to his or her interests. If you choose COD-CON over something like PAX or E3, then I can guarantee that you won't be missed.

Is the multiplayer that "elusive"? Also I was thinking it's about time for some kind of thing like this; hate it or not, CoD is incredibly popular, and you know it.

Just lolz. What's next, Halo Con? At least when it comes to QuakeCon it's interesting to listen what John Cormack has to say abut the new engine or what games they are working on, maybe some surprises. With CoD, we all know there will be anew CoD game in a year from now that will look almost the same and play the same.

I don't get it, so pretty much this is a meeting of uh... you know what? I can't even finish my joke, because the words "COD" and "Con" together are a joke by itself, no explanation needed.

At least with BlizzCon, it is a little interesting. Fans of Blizzard do cosplay and voice-imitations...and there are contests for that. So interesting at the very least.
Is CoD-Con going to have that as well? As one of you guys said, sounds like a "frat party" to me.

....But we've already SEEN the new multi-player...it was called MW2....

As much as I like call of duty, do they really need a whole convention for it? It's not exactly an interesting universe.

Basically to me this is a giant two day tournament that will provide the spectators and losers with forms of "entertainment" in between matches. I could see it being a pretty good place to sell AirSoft guns and the like as well. Also I wouldn't be surprised if there were fan film and costume competitions as well.
I'm not a big fan of CoD, but I think there is a lot more to be had here than people are willing to admit due to an overall anti-anything CoD attitude that seems to blanket a lot of people.

wow really

Activision has the big bucks, and they seclude themselves off into a purely Call of Duty convention? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. If they wanted to start a convention for themselves, they should have done it as 'ActiCon' or something. A convention devoted to Call of Duty.. I cannot imagine this will last for longer than a couple years.

Don't knock it, I'm going to be there, selling knockoff COD/tap-out shirts. I will make millions.

If anybody goes there and releases one hundred thousand angry bees in the midst of all the sweaty, jager bombing, collar poppers, that person can tell everybody they are friends with me.
I mean it.

there are plenty other games that deserve their own conventions, a game that releases a new game each year that is almost completly identical to the last is not one of them.

CoDCon? seriously? I'd lick a doorknob than support CoD.PASS.

I'd much rather go to a cod convention than a Call of Duty convention.

A Call of Duty convention? What is the world coming to
13 years, 5 months ago
Meh, have no desire to go to cons as it is, i am kind of curious as to what the public reception of a CoD Con will be post the event.

In the Great Depression there were a ton of Circus acts to entertain the proles. Not that much different now.

CoD i wouldn't have even thought about giving it a convention although i do wonder if there is a panel for the single player storyline for black ops i would show up to discuss "what the numbers actually mean, mason" if it was not to expensive for a ticket
