Alluding to something we already knew in our hearts, Sony has hinted that development of the PlayStation 4 is already underway.   The news was revealed by Sony's Chief Financial officer Masaru Kato in a conference call earlier today when asked to explain increased research and development (R&D) costs in Sony's full year financial results.

"For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life," he said  "But this is a platform business, so for the future platform - when we'll be introducing what product, I cannot discuss - but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there."

This admission, however, goes against some long standing statements by Sony who described the PS3 as having a 10 year life cycle, and statements made by Sony Computer Entertainments boss Kaz Hira three months ago. In March Kaz Hira told publications, "a near-future PS4 or next-generation home console is not something that we are even debating now"

While it is possible that Sony could have moved up their launch window in response to movements by both Nintendo and, possibly, Microsoft, I think any development into the PS4 must only be in the "brainstorming" session at this point. Considering that they are still producing PS2 units (and publishing games for that console) I can see the PS3 having a lifespan that matches it fairly well.   True, companies are always looking toward the future but I, for one, would feel sorry if the PS3 life cycle was cut down simply to bring us "the next thing." There is a lot of life in that box yet.

They really want to step it up n get gamers to go outside more, so the PS4 will double as a combo Frisbee/Boomerang! http://tinyurl.com/3fk8r85

But in all seriousness, i agree that they are most likely just in the "Brainstorming" portion as well. Also y i still dont have a PS3 is beyond me..

Wow, ten years. What a great ten years it has been. I hope the next decade will live up to expectations.

Does it really contradict Sony's statements of the PS3 having a 10-year lifecycle? As far as I was aware, that statement simply meant they would guarantee the PS3 for 10 years, meaning if the PS4 comes out after only 8 years of the PS3's life, the PS3 would still be supported by Sony for at least 2 more years, much like how the PS2 was still supported for a long while after the PS3's launch, especially in Japan.

Don't get me wrong, Just because they said it, doesn't mean they will do but I was under the impression that's at least what they meant at the time.

Who knows, maybe they wouldn't have said it if they could know then what they know now.

Sony said the PS2 would have 10 year life cycle as well. Then look, six years down the road they released the PS3. While still supporting the PS2. My guess is that they'll do the same for the PS3 once the "PS4" comes out.

I really hope it's just started on the brainstorming process. I don't think anybody will be ready for a new system to come out any time soon.

To be fair, we are now about half way through that 10 year life cycle, and the PS3 is showing no signs of slowing down in terms of big game releases... Just look at the lineup of exclusives for the rest of this year, it has to be one of the better years in terms of big games coming out on PS3.

But really, I would be surprised if a successor to the PS3 -wasn't- in development by now, even if that development is only R&D, which it probably is. With that said, however, we probably have at -least- another year or two of big name games coming out on the PS3 before we see another home console from Sony, and a seven or eight year life cycle is still above average.

Yeah, I'm wondering what new features PS4 can offer to make us considering buying it. I'm pretty satisfied with my PS3 and hope Sony continues to support/improve it for a good ol' couple of years before the next best thing.

Since PS3's motto is "It only does everything", what will PS4's motto be?

The Ps3 hasn't been pushed to it's limit yet so I would say it has a fair a mount of years in it yet but of course that isn't & shouldn't stop them brainstorming the future console, it seems normal practice to me special since Nintendo & Microsoft are moving forward to their next consoles. E3 should be interesting this year, I'm looking forwards to some hopefully good surprises.

When it comes to next gen's consoles, I really hope the developers don't have a repeat of this generation, where we had to choose between paying an arm and a leg (Literally over 500 bucks for either of the HD systems) or choosing something actually in a reasonable price range, but with restricting hardware specs.

In regards to the PS4 specifically, I agree with Joseph and Scifi on the idea that they're simply in the "brainstorming" process. That part of the cycle is where the big-money developers are actually doing the most work, which could easily explain a visible cost increase for the company as a whole.

With how messed up the security for ps3 was, I hope they talk about security measure for ps4 when they eventually announce the console. But really, this isn't surprising, no way is going to let Nintendo or Microsoft get to far ahead of them this time. Project Cafe is still an unknown, but the rumored list of games is amazing. Even if those rumors are false, it's enough to hyped people for Project Cafe. Sony has to be worried about losing that mind share amongst gamers, so getting news out about a potential new console is a good thing.

It's seems so early for a next generation console to come out, and I'm having a hard time imagining what new stuff could be added.

We can only hope for a better easier to code for console so we can get some awesome games faster than this generation. Early PS3 was pretty disappointing.

I'm not sure if I'm excited or just confused.

Do we really need a PS4 being hinted at? What is there to improve from it that we can't add on to our PS3s by hardware or software update that would be a lot cheaper than buying a new console? I'M SO CONFUSED I THOUGHT WE WERE FIIINE

I'm glad that this is just a rumor.

Brainstorming is a good thing but hopefully they won't start working on it till they believe the PS3 needs a big improvement in hardware becoming the PS4.

At least they aren't acting like the douchebag that is Nintendo... For fuck's sake, they're announcing a new console, and in order to cash in on the last bundle of Wii sales, they're releasing a Mario Kart Wii bundle, which will inevitably be obsolete when this new bastard console comes out.
