Ubisoft has announced that Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online is a thing for your PC...and it's free. GRonline, which will feature the cover based third person shooter gameplay synonymous with the Ghost Recon series, is being developed by Ubisoft Singapore and will be preceded by a closed beta which is scheduled to start this summer.
"But it can't all be free, how will they make money?" I hear you asking. GRonline will be using the microtransaction model which, according to Ubisoft, will allow players to further equip their characters with premium items to "personalize their experience".
A press release went out earlier today from Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. "The online market has evolved into an important new frontier for video games and for gamers. With Ghost Recon Online, as well as with other important upcoming projects, Ubisoft is confident that we're creating high quality, innovative online experiences, and that our customers will benefit from the choice and creativity that Ubisoft brings to the market."
You can sign up for the beta on the Ghost Recon Website. Screens and trailer are below.

"…and it’s free. "
:O That is almost to awesome to be true.
"GRonline will be using the microtransaction model"
Oh there we have it -.-
Always these small transactions, me no gusta...
Well, I´ll probably test it out and see if the paying players get an unfair advantage.

only ghost recon i played was GRAW2, and it had a great 16 player coop idea, complete a mission as a small army with 1 life. I'd like to see that in something again, but i don't think that this is that 16 player coop.

When it comes to free games, I've always found that you get what you pay for.

"GRonline will be using the microtransaction model"
And of course, the free players will get fucked over by the paying players in the matches....

Since it's free I guess I'll try it out. Hoping for the best and expecting the worst.

I don't think a lot of people realize the fundamental shift that's going on with online gaming right now, based on the comments.
More and more online games are being launched on micro-transaction models rather than P2P subscriptions because they're becoming more successful.
League of Legends is the biggest example that comes to mind, and it is currently enjoying rather large success with its F2P-Micro-transaction model.
Many other online games, especially MMO's, are looking at using either F2P or B2P (Buy-to-Play) models, because using a subscription based method simply puts too much pressure on both the player AND the developer, even more so when you begin factoring in competition and the fact that most consumers only have the cash for ONE subscription.
So hearing that GROnline will be F2P really doesn't throw up any red flags for myself. As long as their micro-transactions focus on aesthetic and quality-of-life appeal rather than an actual in-game advantage.

Cool, I might actually try it out. Don't see it lasting long though.

It will be fun while it lasts, pretty cool. Thanks for the news.

So many free games eating up hard drive space on my computer as well as my time. Not sure if I'd be interested in this one, but we'll see.

Huh, right amidst me hoping that the Ghost Recon games go on sale during STEAM's Ubisoft week.
Coincidence? I THINK NOT.

Give Ghost Recon to Nexon, then we'll know exactly how their microtransaction model is going to function.
