CHANGE. YOUR. PASSWORDS.

Kotaku is reporting that Sony has finally, after 8 or so days, come clean with the awful, horrible truth. Your personal information was likely stolen during the hacking which has razed the PlayStation Network to the ground.

"We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network," wrote Patrick Seybold, senior director of corporate communications for Sony Computer Entertainment of America on the PlayStation Blog today.

"While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken," writes Seybold, "we cannot rule out the possibility." Which, in light of how things have been handled so far, does not really drip with enthusiasm.

"If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained," Seybold continues. "To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports,"

Sony has now hired a "recognized security firm" to start investigating this mess. In the meantime here is a list of personal information they are fairly positive has been stolen. They think. Kinda.

  • Name

  • Address (city, state, zip)

  • Country

  • Email address

  • Birthdate

  • PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login and handle/PSN online ID.

So stop now, and go change your passwords. Now. Do not wait. Go do it. Now.

I just tried to login via the playstation website and it says:
    "Site Maintenance Notice
The server is currently down for maintenance.
We apologize for the inconvenience. Please try again later."

We are all screwed, but thanks for the heads up.

Complete incompetence. Also, come on Sony; not only do you let someone take my personal information, but then you don't bother confessing about it and letting those effected know for almost a week?

Those passwords better be encrypted at -least-. Otherwise we're all fucked, especially if this stuff gets published, which has happened before (notably with the Gawker hacking last year).

Well, this is the reality that we live in. Companies that handle digital services that request personal information will have to confront cyber thievery. One would hope they would take extra precautions when it comes to vital information, such as card numbers. I don't really care if someone knows who I am and where I live, but I do care if they have obtained any sensitive numbers and/or passwords.

Anyone throwing their PS3 out the window and buying an Xbox? Maybe not the people who just play online games, but for people who have used the store/PSN+ and now have to worry about having their credit card maxed out or identity theft? Or if you're a "Youtube Celebrity" and could potentially be harrassed because your personal information could be leaked.

Thanks for being so swift and forthcoming with this information, Sony. You guys are a shining example of how to run a business and manage its public relations.

I can only be thankful I'm one of 70 million people these hackers have information on, and I check my credit card online daily anyway. If they *did* access financial information on all of us, on the off-chance I'm one of the people these assholes get hold of, I'll be placing a phone call the day it happens. Besides, my card just expired and got renewed and I don't think I've used it on the PSN since then anyway - chances are they've got nothing on me that can hurt me.

While the idea of someone or a group of people getting personal info is unnerving, the person/people that did this can't really do much with the massive amount of account info they acquired, if they use a variety of credit cards for anything besides small purchases, red flags will definitely pop up.

Now if the hackers sell all the info to another source that's a different story and definitely what people should ponder about.

Anyone with a credit card or bank card should immediately set up a spending limit, so the hacker could only take a specific amount it. And when that limit breached, it would notify your banks and credit companies.

My mom caught two hackers by doing that.

well, sony mentioned we might recive email that asks us for personal info, and they confirmed that none of these are from sony and that we shouldnt reply to them. so out of curiosity, i check my email account, and i didnt find anything asking for personal info, but i did find an email saying ive gotten into the infamous 2 beta! :P so im about to log onto psn to redeem my beta download, when i realised psn was down, and on top of that, my personal info was most likely stolen. : /

All of the Sony hate I've been seeing of late is really pissing me off to be honest. People seem to be under the impression that the hacker[s] would metaphorically tag the walls of the PSN with graffiti stating exactly WHAT information had been stolen, and that Sony would know the extent of the situation within 2-4 days. Sony had to hire an outside security firm to conduct an investigation, if that didn't put the scale of this into perspective then I don't know what would.

  • Avatar

You know. I'm always amused by how everyone states "THE HACKERS HAVE YOUR INFO!" When the article they released states that they MAY have your information. It's a certain possibility and add to that, if they have the information of said millions of users, the odds that they make use of your name/account/credit card info is one out of a few millions too.

Top it off, only a handful of thousands of gamers will actually be aware enough to alter their codes/credit cards/etc, which still makes your odd of said possible stolen items which may or may not have been taken to still remain in the 1/millions.

Seriously. Too much panic. And anyways, there are tons of worms and bugs and spyware running around the internet. The odds are higher that you're far more at risk using your PC then with this PSN fiasco.

As for all of you "fuck sony, I'm going to the xbox!" I understand you're angry, but grow up. They "MAY" have your info, so it isnt clear, when the network gets back up, change your password, in the meanwhile; change your passwords that are the same as your psn account, monitor your credit card for unusual transactions, and go outside or something.
And as for the Joseph article haters, he said "Sony Finally Confirms, your personal information was stolen" they are unsure of credit card info, but we know the hackers have gotten access to the other parts mentioned: Name, Address (city, state, zip), Country, Email address, Birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login and handle/PSN online ID.
It's still personal information, not nessecarily your credit card info, even though it's a possibility, and sony does not know the answer either it seems.
Sony could've done a way better job of securing that information, but done is done, and I hope they learn from that.

    ADemonicShadow

They also don't want to put "TOO" much info, the hackers could use it to find out what they know, etc, etc.

Plus theres still the odds that you out of 70 billion user, yea...

Well, just relax, its hopfully a one time thing...

Sony, your doing a good, get it fixed, then make sure it never happens again. I'll keep giving my support as if this happen with the 360's it would have been worst. All the money you spend on them (System, games, online, DLC, batteries, etc.)

    Or maybe I'm underreacting. o.x

I don't find this all too upsetting. Sony is a major company, and I bet there are way more hackers than there are videogame company staff members. So, evantually, a major corporation would get hacked. It just happened to be Sony.
Although they SHOULD be able to prevent that, people make mistakes. They are human (Hopefully).
And I wouldn't get so mad at Sony, just more at Bad Intent Hackers. Because I know alot of hackers who hack stuff to try and improve them or just have fun.
So this sucks, can't play modern warfare 2, just gotta wait for this to blow over.
