Hydrophobia Prophecy is being released on May 9th, but before you get excited I should warn you that this is not the next installment of the series that was originally marketed as a trilogy. No, this is yet another incarnation of the original game now being released both on Steam and PSN with more changes from even more player input.
"This comprehensive reinvention of the title includes upgraded graphics, brand new gameplay mechanics, exclusive new levels, a reworked back story, a dramatic new ending, recast voice acting and much, much more," reads an announcement for the game. This version of Hydrophobia also includes something called "Darknet" which allowes players to input comments and suggestions about the game in real time. According to the developers it's to "deliver specific opinions at any point during the game, which are automatically augmented with contextual data about the game state at that time."
Now, I'm all for listening to player feedback and playtesting but I can't help but feel that this is getting a little ridiculous. There are actual celebrated games that don't put this much effort into dredging the bottom of lake-gamer for ideas on how to make their game better. It's like a mediocre looking starlet getting face lift after face lift and bursting out of the hospital after each operation shouting "LOVE ME! DO YOU LOVE ME NOW!?" until, at the end of the day, her face is nothing more than a horrid mess of jumbled scalpel cuts and displaced skin.

I think it is great! They made a game that was very flawed, however it had some great mechanics and ideas. It is amazing how they instead of just being all like "Oh well, we failed", they are going back and repairing it to make it the game they tried to make in the first place. It might be a little ridiculous to re-released the game multiple times, but are not giving up.

What does that say about a developer? That they don't know what a good game is? Dear lord. Also, nice analogy at the end.

Look like third time is the charm. However it looks like the want have a more balanced structure before they can move on to the next game in the series.

You can polish a turd all you want, it'll still smell like shit and leave an awful taste in your mouth.

Yeah, I've got to at least respect their persistence in trying to get this game up to their audience's standards. But now it's getting kind of ridiculous - releasing the game and releasing patches as you people encounter bugs is one thing. Re-releasing the game and re-re-releasing the game is where it gets kind of ridiculous. Not sure whether this means the next instalment of the Hydrophobia series (assuming it's still coming out) is gonna be even more improved over this, or if it's gonna need to be repeatedly re-released too.

Could be interesting seeing it on Steam, not sure yet if I'll make the purchase though. I never bothered with it in the past since I've cut off my Xbox 360 from new games (PC and PS3 user now). The fluid dynamics of the game is obviously the aspect which intrigues me the most. Hopefully they brace themselves for the impending torrent of feedback such as "lulz, this place needs less water" , "my gun goes pew pew, how about you make it go boom boom!" ,and of course the sage advice "needs bigger bewbs!!!1" Though, I suppose I can vouch for a wet t-shirt physics patch, including more female enemies. Don't look at me like that, you know you'd want that too.

Being someone who actually wanted to play Hydrophobia but lacked the whole Xbox 360 prerequisite, I'm glad that they're taking the time to rework the game and at least try to make it better rather than just throwing their unchanged mess at a wider audience. At the very least, it shows some commitment to the quality of their product and to the players that give it some feedback.
Not only that, but since Hydrophobia is the first of that sort of game from Dark Energy Studios, reworkings now could help the studio and make sure the sequels or "spiritual successors" (should they go that route) are much better than the original, and the feedback could be universally helpful in them developing games, since they'd know what players wanted and the things that they'd need to tighten up more.

It is now officially being advertised on Steam and pre-orders are being accepted. A nice 15% discount incentive for those who want to jump on it early. $11.99 will be the official price ($10.19 with that discount) which is pretty reasonable. There is also the potential for patches in the future with a few free goodies, since the developers seem interested in making improvements. I like supporting developers that continuously improve their games and price them reasonably, so I might end up biting after all.

I just hope they burn themselves out and ditch the sequels. Plus if they're putting this much effort in the sequels would have to be bloody awesome to satisfy all their critics. If the new voice acting is good I hope they patch it across to the XBLA version. Honestly I wish they'd just ditch the Irish/Scottish voices altogether and just get plain old English/American voices. I'm not racist or anything I just don't like accents unless they're fully serious, or fully comedic. Accents just for accents sake is annoying... unless of course the accents are authentic then it's understandable.
