Nintendo is walking back earlier statements it made last week saying they had no interest inworking with "garage developers." A strange statement seeing as these types of developers are responsible for breakout hits like Minecraft and Super Meat Boy. After a bit of expected uproar from the aforementioned garage community they have released a new statement clarifying their original position.

Nintendo director of PR Mark Franklin stepped in to clean up.

"Nintendo always appreciates good quality content regardless of whether that's coming from an indie developer or a more established publisher. For example, we've worked with 2D Boy, the people behind World of Goo for WiiWare," he added. "This is a group of guys who don't even have an office. So we embrace that kind of independent spirit and it's ultimately the most innovative content that will rise to the top."

Ah...I love the smell of a well washed response, and certainly the answer that should have been given at the beginning. Now Nintendo...about that quality. Wiiware...why don't you have a seat.

I think the best advice for Nintendo is " Be Big but don't ACT big". I'm sure they still remember owning the industry like a Roman Emperor but they need to put that behind them.Garage developers are the ones besides Bethesda and Valve who will put out the new free thinking stuff. The problem with the old guard is they have tendency to want to copy the top money making games till exaustion (similiar to how everyone copied Deth Lepard in the 80's LOL).

Funny you should mention Super Meat Boy. Nintendo turned them away because it was well over the size limit for Wiiware and the creators weren't willing to give Wii users a cut-down version. I don't feel sorry for them though. Their egos need to be taken down a peg if they really expected Nintendo would bend the rules just for them when they submitted the full-sized version.
