Codemasters has released a new trailer for the next installment in the Operation Flashpoint series. Called " Red River" is shows how a small US Marine force would fight off a larger enemy contingent.
I know what you're going to say. "Wow Joseph, another war game. I'll get to it just as soon as I get tired of my Call of Medal of Duty for Honors Class." But you have to remember something, Operations Flashpoint is nothing like those other "Call of Honor" games. It's something much different.
When Operation Flashpoint was first released it was a PC only game that catered not to the shooter crowd, but to the military sim enthusiast crowd. It was about large scale military tactics in an open-world setting. Everything from tanks, jets, jeeps, civilian vehicles, choppers...you name it. It also came with an extensive map editor with which you could create any mission type you liked, add in AI, route points, objectives or anything else you liked. Often times I would create two tank Platoons made up of AI and watch them fight it out.
Though I'm guessing that the map editor will not be available in the console release, what you will have is large-scale military tactics in large open-world areas. Not the corridor-shooter model that most of our current military shooters employ. Do not, for a moment, think that Operation Flashpoint is just more of the same. It most certainly is not. It will be a game where no two battles are run the same, a game where you won't be able to memorize which doors the enemy will pop out from. Operation Flashpoint is actually something very fresh, and sorely needed in the current state that the modern FPS has found itself in. And it can flourish, as long as people give it a chance.

I tried to like the last operation flashpoint, I really did. But I just couldn't get into it. The controls frustrated me a lot, and the difficulty in finding a target just became too much for me. Maybe ill rent it, we'll see.

I still think ArmA is the true successor to Operation Flashpoint

The co-op for Dragon Rising was balls, pretty much. Checkpoints didn't work.. x-x
It was so fun though. I really like Operation Flashpoint games, and I totally want to play this with friends and stuff, but the developers are not making it easy. I want a working co-op system before I buy this game.

I've spent hundreds of hours with the first OFP 1 and it's expansion pack, Resistance. My favorite game of all time.

Nothing against the Marines, but I wish other branches of the U.S military would get some more love. Almost every military shooter that tries to be realistic has you playing as either a Marine or some super special top secret government SF team member.

I feel like they could make this an immensely more attractive trailer if they actually showed most of it in First Person. Or take a Battlefield approach and show a small but intense section.
