We all knew it in the back of our minds, but this week Famistu has made it official. Project Dark has been renamed Dark Souls andis to be the official sequel to From Software's Demon's Souls. Not only that, Famitsu has also announced that a worldwide release is currently in the works with the game slated for a PS3 and Xbox 360 release in the US by the end of the year.  The game is reportedly to remain a PS3 exclusive only in Japan and will be published in all regions by Namco Bandai Games.

1up is reporting that the game will be similar to Demon's Souls but have a much larger world that will not be separated by a main portal area. Rather, the player will explore the world on one huge map. Customization will also be deeper. They are doing away with the class system found when you first make a character in Demon's Souls and opting for a blank slate character that can  be customized to the players style.

Co-op and competitive online functionality will be enhanced but we have not learned yet how exactly this will be done.

This is awesome news. I don't care how difficult people thought the first one could seem at times, it was an enjoyable game, and I can't wait for this.

Love the fact that this is coming out on Xbox 360, the online play should be much more enjoyable.

I don't see how people thought Demon Souls was hard, it seriously wasn't. All Demon Souls took, was basic knowledge of how enemies attacked. After that it was just dodging and attacking.

Awesome, I loved Demons Souls even though I haven't beat it or played it in a while. I'm glad this type of game will now be available to a wider audience. One huge map sounds interesting can't wait to see how they will pull it off.

I was hype because it's demon souls 2, then I was un-hype because I remembered I didnt have a PS3, but now I'm ultra hype since I found out it is for the 360 too.

I just hope PS3 and 360 don't have any sort of online interaction. I would much rather stay away from the 360 player base. Call me biased :P

As a player who just finished Demon's Souls recently, I have to admit that these news hit the spot. I kinda liked the complex-yet-simple map designs on Demon's Souls, but an open world map sounds something to look forward to.
I hope however that the dev-team will change the multiplayer into something more "open", as the more isolated form of online play in Demon's Souls only fit the dungeon-type level designs it had. Guess we'll see what they have in mind.

And "Dark Souls"? Gotta love that name.

As long as it's just as challenging. I hope online isn't messed with too much, the sense of isolation really helped with the atmosphere of the first game. Voice chat and too many players in one map would absolutely would ruin it.

Do want. I'm glad the success of the original warranted a sequel. (To be honest, I would've been surprised if there WASN'T a sequel given the success despite the no advertising thing.)

I know Mr. Simons is dancing on the ceiling about the open-world seamless thing.

Open world Demon's Souls....between this and skryrim I'm going to sink so much time in gaming this year. Can't wait to see how they expand on the world design, maybe the Land of the Giants will be accessible this time around?

i hope the single map doesn't mean i can be invaded at any given time...that would be kind of super lame. and they better put in some kind of checkpoint system

    Misleading titles -_-

This isn't a sequel to Demon's Souls because the sequel would be called Demon's Souls 2. This is about as much of a Demon's Souls sequel as Demon's Souls was a King's Field sequel or as much as Yakuza 3 is a sequel to Shenmue 2.
