I guess that's goes for almost every game that's been released this year. Oh yeah, fuck black ops and activist-ion.

Funny, true, but also a tad ironic coming from the guy responsible for "Gears Of War". Unless of course he's going the self-deprecation route, but I dunno. "Gears Of War 3" looks to be very much the same as the original games. Self-deprecation usually acknowledges a fault, and you'd think one who acknowledges a fault would.....I dunno.....try to correct it.

that 1993 map reminds of a DOOM 2 map. Bioshock wasnt like the one on the right though it was fairly like the 1993 side, one of the few games that isnt a straight line to the end.

There are no cutscenes in Call of Duty.

I think he made an error, instead substitute "cutscene" for "Quick time event"

I see fatal flaws in both maps, obviously one is quite obvious but the others fault is it's overcomplexity. Older FPS design have always been IMO no better then mazes once everything is dead you are left finding the objective/key/switch that allows you to proceed to the next bit of maze and getting lost in any section can be devastating to a players interest especially since a large part of shooters is the fast paced action. It is a shame that companies have so quickly gone from one extreme to the other as some of the most interesting shooters actually use a design combining both types of maps. (Half Life, BioShock, Fear, Far Cry, Crysis, Call of Juarez)

lol That's pretty good. It's funny to really see it in your face like that.

Though, it is ironic coming from Cliff Blizinski. Actually, it's kind of unfair that he mentions that. Sure, you could say that he's making fun of himself but it's obvious that he's trying to poke fun at other games that does this and hoping to have the people forgive him as well because after all, he's not denying the fact that he too follows this scheme. This is just my thought from looking at the picture and could be entirely incorrect.

Though it is true that games nowadays have followed a pretty strict linear path (perhaps to account new players and make the games more streamlined and simple), I don't think that it's a bad thing as well. Not all games are built to have an expansive map such as Doom or Bioshock. I guess it all depends on what you want your game to be. And by deciding what you want out of your game, you have to decide on what kind of universe you want your game to exist in, whether it be open world, an elaborate map, on-the-rails, or linear. Sure some games can take advantage of having the best of both worlds such as Bioshock, where story (which is absent a lot in FPS's) is crucial but also provides satisfying shooting. And some games where the action and cutscenes are the most important aspect, follow a linear path like Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, and the Call Of Duty series.

For me personally, if the game is just plain fun, I could care less if the game has an expansive world or is linear, after all, I loved Metal Gear Solid 4, sort of enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII, and love the Call Of Duty games.

Without giving any spoilers, this section is actually from a point in the game where it is very psycology heavy for the player, where there are lots of cutscenes messing with your head and snippets of things, not really cutscenes but yea. It's just a part in the game guys, it isn't all like this.
