It should be no surprise to anyway, but word has come out that Enslaved is now officially underperforming sales expectations. Expected to sell about 800K units, it's missing its expected sales numbers by around 200k. Though not terrible per se', I can almost promise that a bulk of those numbers are due to the smaller independent outfits, like us, pushing this title pretty hard in the run up to it's release.
Now I personally have a few problems with the title but it definitely should be doing better than this, if even just for the appreciation of its story nuance and brilliant characterization.
So what do you think held the game back? Or if you didn't buy it...why not? Was it the brightly colored, full bloom, vision of the apocalypse that turned you off? Or maybe the market is experiencing some fighter action / platformer fatigue?

I would love to buy it, but I'm a bit strapped for cash.

Am I a bad person because instead of buying the game, I just watched someone play through it on YouTube?
Also, here in Norway the games costs 103 dollars. Thats right. One hundred and three dollars!! So can you blame me?

For me, money has always been an issue when it comes to buying games. Nowadays I always have to wait for a cheaper, used version. Now the concept of the game sounds interesting and of course I'd give it a shot but even if I did have the money to buy it, I still probably wouldn't buy it just because it's kind of difficult for me to justify a full price purchase for a game that isn't very long, but that's just a personal thing. Although, in the area where I live, all 4 libraries nowadays rent out games and several games I've tried have been from borrowing them there. It's really handy when you're strapped for cash. lol Maybe I'll see it there sometime.

These are one of those titles that has no replay value or has any gameplay that'll make me want to play it again. Games that only have lasting power for one play through fail to fully give me the value for my money. This game did a lot of things right with the story, but in the end, the gameplay wasn't compelling enough to warrant my 60$ purchase.

I think people aren't as interested in this kind of fantasy setting anymore. They would much rather prefer to play something like Fallout, with a similar post-apocalyptic setting, but with a more "grittier" world. I myself am tired of this whole "nuclear wasteland" fad that many developers have started. And I believe a game like Enslaved, who's setting is so lush and vivid, deserves more than what it has gotten. I would much rather explore a huge, foresty, and interesting world than a flat, destroyed, and simply featureless landscape.

I would have bought it. But Castlevania was released on the same day and Castlevania was longer and had more combos which was the selling point for me. If I had the money (which I don't) I would've bought both.

I really wanted to pick this game up as it had a charm to it similar (but very different) to Jak. Unfortunately I didn't have the available cash as I don't rent games at the moment, I have to buy as many as I can.
Honestly the true reason this game didn't sell was because of marketing. Yes there was a few TV ads at release, but the months building up to it, you needed to follow video games in general too know the title existed as there was little push. Plus in a season of multiple highly regarded games coming out, it just never had the chance and was stupid to even really, it probably should have been a summer blockbuster.

Since my funds are only ever so limited I can only buy certain games. Enslaved sure sounded interesting with its somewhat unique visual style and the "lifelike" characters, however gameplay wise I couldn't see Enslaved offering anything new that would make me spend 60€.
I do not think it is the colourful theme but more the marketing.
Sad but true this game does not bring much new to the table. Apart from the story and the characters it is still, in my eyes, a 1 in a thousand action game.

Something about the graphics and setting just was off putting. If they focused more ads on the face capture stuff it probably would sell more. All that I saw and that Brad demoed (I missed the actual play) just didn't yell a "must buy" to me.
But then, I'm not really into fighting robots unless it's Samurai Jack style or if it's not the only enemy type. I like beating humans up now and then too.

Went to the midnight release, bought it, loved it. Laughed at people who picked up Lords of Shadow instead.
200k really isn't anything to sneeze at though, it seems.

I bought the game, even though I could've easily beaten this game on a rental. But I rented it solely to support Ninja Theory.
I've already traded it in though.

bought it, beat it twice, loved it to no end, the design of the characters, the world and well..everything turned me off at first, but after a few great impressions, and tons of praise on the story I just had to get it, thoughout the game all of my design issues grew on me, and I loved it by the end of it, I'm not surpriced the game sold as mediocre as it did, but I don't accept it; fuck castlevania with it's overbundance of hype =/

Based on the developer videos Ninja Theory made it seem like they wanted to make a 8-hour movie rather than a game (which turns out "Enslaved" was originally supposed to be a CG-movie,fancy that). "We got Andy Serkis!!!! *circle jerk*" I mean, that's good and all,but it's not gonna sell me a game.

If I was to draw a piechart of important aspects of videogames, story and characterization would definitely be present. However, a large majority of that pie chart would be taken up by gameplay. If the gameplay is not unique, well-done, or appealing to me, I'm not going to play the game. Don't get me wrong, the story was great, but I could just watch Brad or David play the game and appreciate the story, which is what I did. Being disappointed that the game didn't sell even though it had an exceptional story is fruitless. They didn't market well. The gameplay was average. The story could have put this game over the top, but cannot drive sales alone. A simple analogy would be that gameplay is to videogames as story is to books. These are just my two cents though.

It's really sad to see a game like this not sell as well as other games out there. Yeah, the demo was a really straight forward one, but the story set-up is what really got me into it. The only thing that's holding me back from buying this game is my lack of money at the moment.

I hate to play devils advocate because I really enjoyed this game, but 600,000 or so copies in this day and age isn't really that bad at all... Compared to games I loved like Dead Space Extraction and Little Kings Story selling far, far under 50,000 I just can't really feel too bad about this.

I didn't play it because the demo sucked. The platforming plays itself, the combat is dull, and the game isn't good enough to survive on story (which I heard was equally as shitty) alone.

Bah! I was hopping this would sell better. Oh well, I guess we wont get a sequel.

Simple reasons: PS3 costs more than $2000 in Brazil, and this game costs more than $150...
