Whats the big news today? So far it's Valve announcing Defense of the Ancients 2, or Dota 2 (NOT DotA), for the PC and MAC to be released sometime in 2011.  For those not in the know like us cool kids, DotA was a mod for Warcraft III that had object destruction and defense as it's main style of gameplay.

Valve had gone and trademarked Doat some time ago so this is not really a huge surprise.  From the Valve Press release:

VALVE ANNOUNCES DOTA 2

Leading Independent Studio Reveals "IceFrog's" New Project

October 13, 2010 - Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Dota 2, a massive sequel for one of the most played games in the world.

Coming to the PC & Mac in 2011, Dota 2 promises to take the unique blend of online RTS and RPG action that has made Dota popular with tens of millions of gamers and expand upon it in every way.
The new game will supposedly be including all 100 + characters from the original and make use of steams heafty social networking platforms.

Joystiq has some further details from the Game Informer coverage.

    Wow, that's insane. Also, unsurprising.

Also, I think you mean DoTA in the beginning

I'd advise people to hurry before it gets pulled.

Spell check issue: you said DoaT instead of Dota "...DoaT was a mod for Warcraft III..."

So this is going to be a full game and not a mod? Interesting, you don't often see full games being released as sequels to a mod or DLC.

Cant wait. I never actually played Dota but I did get into league of legends and a game like that inside the Warcraft universe would be pretty awesome.

I really don't think this is gonna turn out good for some reason. I think League of Legends already has a pretty firm grasp on the Dota community, and also a lot of the people who haven't experienced Dota. But this is Valve we're talking about so who knows. I just don't like the fact they're bringing back "denying" tactic.

The HoN community has been talking about this as well. Considering a fair amount of its community were ex-dota players, and some of the pros migrated to HoN from dota.
I like the fact that they keep the deny, preserving the gameplay dynamics to the laning phase than that easy mode in the other game.
I'm interested to see how dota2 will turn out, how the business model will be, and especially all of other metagame stuff like stat tracking, reconnection, delay compensation and also the spectator/replay functionality. HoN did well in those aspects so I'm curious to see how will valve handle those issues.
The concept art looks great, but that still does not tell us how the in-game footage will look like.
Will be trying it out when opportunity arises.

This is pretty cool, I want to see some more on this. I like that Valve keeps bringing more than just the usual.
