A new Kinect ad has been released and it reveals the marketing strategy that Microsoft has decided to use.

    1. Use trendy music;
    1. Use pretty people;
    1. Speak in nonsensical jingoism's and, most importantly;
    1. Show no game footage whatsoever.

It's not really a commercial for a game system or a peripheral as much as it's a commercial saying:

"Look at these people! They are pretty and rich and hip! Don't you want to be pretty and rich and hip! Then you must buy this thing. You NEED to own this thingamajig! YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WHY! You just need this gizmo-ga-doodle!!"

OMG DON'T YOU FEEL THE NEED GROWING WITHIN YOU!?

I wish I could say that I think people are smarter than this but I simply do not have that much faith in humanity. You can sell a bag of dog vomit for $150 bucks in this country if you make a nice enough ad for it. I only ask that you don't fuck up the next Steel Battalion. Then, and only then, I might forgive everyone for this horrific mess.

UPDATE: Microsoft has lost it's fucking mind.

UPDATE II: I'm hearing that the ad below is actually a fake. Just an old seatbelt ad with the Kinect logo thrown onto the end. Touche' microsoft. Touche'.  I so wish it was real though.

    There is too game footage, you can see the TV at the end! Gah, how'd you miss that, Joseph :P.

    I thought the music was pretty damn irritating, I don't to hear someone constantly saying the same thing over again like that.

    Also, am I the only one who thought this is just like those Wii commercials?

    I think it looks all right. It gets the point across that there is no hand held controller, but as Hegs mentioned, it does have a strong resemblance to a Wii commercial. It would have been nice to see them try and be a little more distinguishable in that regard.

    Just remember!

    YOU are the controller!

    Now that's a slogan i want to stand up, shake my head with crossed arms and just say "No" to.

    "I thought the music was pretty damn irritating, I don’t to hear someone constantly saying the same thing over again like that."

    That's the point of the song. It makes fun of other songs like it.

    Yeah (Pretentious version) - LCD Soundsystem

    You can look it up if you'd like.

    So now unless you have your family to act as a seatbelt you can die from playing Kinect.

    Confirmed.

    But seriously, what the hell was with that last ad? This has to be the worst marketing for a gaming peripheral I have ever seen. I hope Kinect crashes and burns faster than Sharon Stone's beaver shot.

    These ads are pretty goofy to say the least. The First ad had horrid music that made me laugh. Also in the first ad everyone was either dancing or leaning from side to side, those activities vary less than any shooter released this generation.

    It will be a silly and hilarious day if dancing games and soccer ball kicking simulators become the main source of entertainment in the videogame world.

    The first one was pretty bad, but god damn, that second one was... stupid.

    Just to let you know, the second commercial you posted is fake.
    It's a campaign to make people wear seatbelts, just with a picture of kinect at the end, pretty clever, but not real.

    See, I thought Kinect may have had a chance when Microsoft was really pushing it as some sort of 1:1 skateboard-scanning godcomputer. Now it comes time to sell the thing and they just show people doing Wii-like gestures and dancing? How is that supposed to trick anybody into thinking they want a Kinect?

    I'd much rather buy a Hoop with a Stick. It's much, much cheaper and you don't even need to stand in front of the tv. Think about it people it's even already out in 3D and you don't need glasses, OoOoOowh!

    It's the future of gaming, I JUST KNOW IT!

    ...urg.
    The problem with that ad is that they look ridiculous. And kind of dumb. I'll say one thing for the Wii ads. They had something in their hands, a center of control, and didn't do...that. I don't know. I like a center of control, I'm not a fan of flailing around wildly. Heck, the Move commercial I saw, I liked, why? Because it was uber silly and played on the fact that it was a motion control thing. It was a bit too much like the Wii, yes, but the ad was original enough.

    This is...urg.
    I love the fake ad though. It was amusing. And actually kind of cool. Just as long as it isn't a real ad.

    the first ad is horrible but not because its "hipster"

    the 2nd ad is actually pretty good (which is why its not actually a kinect ad) and again, is far from "hipster"

    i hate this label throwing bullshit

    Joseph, are you sure you didn't mean "platitudes" instead of "jingoisms"?

    Regardless, I agree that the ad is horrific, and I also agree that people are brain dead enough to fall for it.
