Wut. Tango Gameworks, recently founded by Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil, Godhand, Vanquish), is now property of Zenimax (Bethesda, Id). This is certainly bizarre. Tango has yet to ship a project, and with Mikami's involvement on Vanquish and Grasshopper's Shadows of the Damned, I would be surprised if they even began work on game. So why would Bethesda buy this studio?

Maybe they want Mikami to finally make combat good in Elder Scrolls? Fallout with better gunplay? Maybe they want boosting in Doom 4? My guess is they want Mikami working on a new IP. And with Bethesda being a Western publisher, I would bet on a horror title over a crazy over-the-top Japanese action game.

With Zenimax growing the way they are, I wouldn't be surprised if we will be saying "Fuck Zenimax" during our 4 Player Minute segment on the podcast. Let's hope it never comes to that.

Yeah, this is officially a "huh?". Maybe Zenimax is trying to work their way into Japanese development/publishing...?

Haha. Exciting combat in elder scrolls and sharp shooting mechanics in Fallout would be pretty sweet...but definitely a weird move by Zenimax

    Well, it'll be interesting nonetheless.

Zenimax has been putting feelers out in a lot of different studios over the past few years. This looks like a natural progression of that, but I'm doubting that Tango Gameworks will influence any standing series. Zeni is probably looking to invest early in another genre of games, one with a more Mikami flavor.

This certainly was an unexpected announcement, but at the moment I am optimistic. A) I love Bethesda, B) It is Shinji Mikami

What ever a game could be from them I am unsure, but with bigger budgeting and the care thats put into any game thats produced by the both of them, well it should be a great and interesting outcome. Could we be seeing more Western/Japanese development relationships begin to happen?

Hmm. I dunno....all I get from this is a stupid westernization vibe....very peculiar news, I really don't know what to think about this.

I honestly can't comprehend this move.

But, I just hope they let him do his own shit, an not make him fix up their mistakes...

What Bethesda really needs is a new QA department, not a Japanese developer. Still, I can't help but be intrigued by the prospect of Mikami working for a Western studio.

it's weird, but at least Shinji Mikami's talent is getting recognized, and he's getting bought up by a pretty large publisher.
And as I don't think any of the bethesta owned games that comes to mind is fitted for Mikami's style of making games, it'll most likely be a new IP, which is awesome because well, it's Shinji Mikami (duh)

I guess those Japanese games will be even more westernized because of this. They will also probably be filled with numerous bugs.

Or maybe they are bringing him on to work on the polish of their games, and smooth the animations?

I'm personally excited. It's nice to see Shinji being supported by a company with some legs.

This is a secret plot by the evil owners of Zenimax to take over the world, it's obvious.

Bethesda could definitely use a Japanese touch when it comes to their character models and animations. They are total uggos.

Now coming soon, a Shinji Mikami game with lots and lots of glitches ! Ehhh see this is why there hasn't been a new Elder Scrolls game. Bethesda is spending it's energies on other peoples properties than their own. Personally I love Fallout 3 and New Vegas but if they didn't have dreams to be the Walmart of game publishers then we "Could" have had a remake of their best game ever which is Daggerfall or at least some kind of remaster of this game and their first game Arena so all of the Elder Scroll games could be on the market.

Wait. Tango was BOUGHT, buy Bethesda? As in, Tango/Shinji Mikami is not longer a Subsidiary/Working with Platinum Games? If so, it makes me sad, Shinji Mikami and Platinum Games Quality was an awesome mix. Hopefully though, they give Mikami creative freedom. A Japanese/Western Mixed Openworld Shooter RPG? Good Combat? One can only dream in a land of failed experiments.

Let's just hope that Shinji Mikami brings Bethseda up and that it isn't the other way around. (Bethseda bringing Shinji Mikami down.)

Perhaps Mikami is going to work on a new IP and Bethesda will give him a good budget to work with.
