Holy. Shit.  Today, at the Tokyo Game Show, Microsoft has announced Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor. It was revealed by Capcom's Keiji Inafune, creator of Mega Man and producer of Onimusha, to be Capcoms core Kinect game. That expensive controller that was released with the original?  Well it's being replaced with you apparently.

(I should mention that at this moment I hate Capcom because they have just given me a reason to actually buy a Kinect.)

Capcom is joining forces with From Software to set this game in the year 2082 during a future where there are no computers. If you look at the screenshots below everything does seem to have a WWII feel so expect a lot less bleeping screens and a lot more oil and pistons.  How would this work on the kinect? Well I would suppose the myriad of buttons you'll now need to press will simply be on the screen, and it will be up to the Kinect software to accurately see what you're trying to hit. Worrysome, yes. But if they can get it right...well its Steel fucking Battalion.

The official press release tells us:

"Manhattan, 2082: In a world where computers and almost all modern technology have been lost, the greatest nations of the world continue to battle for supremacy. The American army lands in New York to begin its first big offensive of a long ground war. Soldiers fire from the trenches as scorched bunkers belch black smoke. As comrades continually fall to the unrelenting crossfire of bullets, the Vertical Tanks make their relentless advance. Experience the battlefield as never before with Kinect for Xbox 360."

Steel Battalion was always my favorite Mech game right behind the old PC Mechwarrior series. There will be a toast with my drink tonight...and to Capcom it will be.

Okay, when I first read this article title, I was like, "Hooolyyyy shiiiiiit" after playing the first SB at PAX and being blown away, but when I read that it's using the kinect with no amazing controller, I was totally let down. Seriously. :(

If, however, they also release a peripheral with it eventually, or make a way to use the old controller, then I will be ultra happy. :D

Looks pretty cool. The giant mech genre of games has been let down as of late by the deluge of terrible Gundam games. Its cool to see them coming back to this series. I do have to say though, I'm a little bummed there won't be some super niche and outrageous controller to go with this ga.... Oh I see now.

I'm not sure how Kinect will handle this. It doesn't seem like the optimal way of controlling a game like this. But I will reserve any concern until a game play video or a control demo.

This will either be incredibly fucking awesome or an unplayable mess. I'm hoping for the former.

So America lost New York? Wow.... And a mech game for the Kinect..... Hopefully it will be intense and not an absolute mess. But the graphics do look nice.
