And there was much jubilation! Nintendo has announced that the 3DS will be released in March 2011 in North American and Europe.  As for pricing,  25,000 Yen, or almost  $299 was revealed this morning but no details about an American or European price as given so take that as you will.

For that (possible) $300, you're not just getting a 3DS. The handheld will also be a Game Boy Virtual Console which includes a Game Boy, Game Boy Advanced, and a Game Boy Color.  Everything old is new again!

The lineup of games is also slowly growing.  During a press conference in Japan this morning Nintendo President Satoru Iwata showed a number of old gems being re-realized on the new hardware.  Paper Mario, Ridge Racer, Professor Layton, Starfox 64, Animal Crossing and The Legend of Zelda where shown and a Driver 3DS has also been announced alongside the already excitable lineup.

Other tidbits from the press conference provided by Eurogamer:

Other tidbits revealed: The Last Story will be released in Japan on 27th January. Nintendo will release a DSi LL Super Mario 25th anniversary version on 28th October in Japan. Iwata confirmed the already leaked Wii Remote Plus, with details to come at a later date. Resident Evil: Revelations and Metal Gear Solid 3DS were shown. You can stop gameplay to connect to the web via a browser. There is a Mii creation studio. All 3DS games can communicate while in sleep mode.

And more: Namco Bandai would like to use Tag Mode for rankings and exchanging ghost data in Ridge Racer 3DS. Street Fighter IV 3DS will use Wi-Fi to receive fight requests wherever you are.
Nintendo, meanwhile, is not one to whitewash the announcement.  The company also forecasted that the 3DS would sell 4 million units in the first month of release. Industry analyst Michael Pachter has, in the past, raised that number by anticipating a quick sell of 10 million units.

So, is $300 too much for this handheld? After trying it at E3 I know I'm on board but I'm wondering if anyone else is having second thoughts.

    Oh baby.

Although I have to admit I'm iffy on the price tag, compared to its predecessors. I wasn't one of the lucky ones to try it out at E3 though, so I suppose I'll just have to take a gamble and buy it when it comes out.

And I hope to god the battery life is much, MUCH better than the DSi. Good god, I hate my DSi.

I'm honestly not in on the whole 3D fad, whether it be 3DS or just simple television 3D.
I just hope the console will have some good games and good in-built applications.
    But here's my question:
WILL IT PLAY REGULAR DS GAMES?

If people were willing to spend $300 on PSPs with limited libraries then I don't think there will be very many people holding back on this thing.

What I'm not getting is how it handles backwards compatibility. It says virtual console so does that mean I'm going to have to re-purchase my gameboy catalog if I want to only carry around one gaming device? Its not a major complaint but still that kind of sucks.

I'm still excited about this thing though. I may not be able to pick one up at launch but I can see one of these in my future.

I was willing to spend 200 dollars on this, not sure im willing to throw another 100 for it. The games so far look really good, but 300 is out of the question

    200 tops.

I bought a Go, but not until I saw it for 200, and the thing is like dead already.

I refuse to spend more than that on principle. If I'm paying 300, I'm expecting PS3 level performance.

Honestly I think that this price tag is OK, if it was any other version of the DS or any other handheld I would be unhappy. But the 3DS has a lot of promise and seems to be adding a lot more to hanheld gaming, that this price entrance is rather suitable.

really, it would be cool if they released a device that let you download the data from a cartridge onto your 3ds, like i could just hook up my golden sun and download it directly onto the system instead of buying it off a shop system. I do hope they price things fairly though. I am NOT paying $10 for a gba game. for many of those games, $4-6 would be fair.

If it is going to cost 25,000 yens or about $299, then I would suspect that it is going to cost about the same in North America and Europe. Just looking back on what the consoles (i.e. PS3, Wii, and XBox36) and handhelds (i.e. DS and PSP) cost in past for each region, there isn't much difference, so I guess it is safe to say that if it is going to cost $299 in Japan, it's going to cost about $299 in North and Europe.

Personally, I'm not paying that kind of money for 3DS. I'm not convinced yet that it is worth $299. 3D is not that big of a deal to me...glasses or not.

I guess 300 dollars is alot if your poor or dont have a job, in which case why are you reading this? Go get a job. I will buy 5 of these. 4 to sell to shitty mothers on ebay for their whining children at 1000 dollars a piece, and one for myself because this thing has some already amazing games.

    Arg.
Frustrating. I have never had a DS. The last handheld that I had was that old GBA. $300 though? My family has never paid more than $200 for a game system before. Ever. PS2? Waited till it dropped to that price, PS3, we found it online for that price, GBC bought hella cheap when the GBA came out, and GBA was bought by a rich uncle.

So maybe if I got a job I could save for it, if not for the many expenses I know I'll have to deal with soon. It's unfortunate, but I am pretty damn sure that this will sell. No matter what. I mean, it sounds great. It really does! I like how they have so much for it already known and the games are all looking amazing, and it just seems so cool. Especially since I've never had a DS. If I could, I'd get this. I think it would be a better choice than paying $150 for an older DS that might not be supported anymore.

Wait, GBC/GBA games are compatible with the 3DS? Fucking sweet. I'm still using my old original DS and it's held up perfectly, but I'm definitely ready to upgrade. I think I can look forward to waiting a while if it's going to be $300 at launch, though. Such is life in the lower middle class.

Ouch... It really is more than the Wii and Gamecube launched at. I barely play handhelds unless I'm on an airplane or the toilet, eh but whatever, the idea of a new Paper Mario has me pretty excited.

300 dollars is really expensive. I was ready to shell out 200, but not 300. Hopefully there will be a price drop.

I rather buy this than an iPhone.
However, $300 is really hefty. I expected $250.
    Still don't have a PS3 yet too.

I've always understood that when it comes to processing power and graohics, PS and XBOX beat out Nintendo hands down. But the reason why that never seemed to matter to the consuming public was because Nintendo had one thing that Sony and Microsoft never had, a compelling price point. No offense to Nintendo, but if they're going to start selling their products at Sony/Microsoft level prices points, shouldn't the quality of the product also equal Sony/Microsoft? 3D technology is cool and all, but I'm not sure it outweighs the other ways that the DS is behind the PSP, in terms of graphics, processing power, and stuff like that. For 300$ I'd really just rather stick with my old DS fattie, and pick up a PSP.

I don't think I'am willing to lay down 300 $ for a 3DS, That is the same price of a PS3. My personal opinion Console >>> Handheld no matter what the gimmick.
