It seems like I've been writing about this a lot lately but I just can't let some good ol' fashion ignorance go unnoticed.  Failed newspaper, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer which published its last print edition back in March of 2009, has run a story called "Detectives: Murder motive may have been video game fantasy" in which they skim over the details of a horrible rape and murder to focus in on one fleeting quote of a police detective and use it as the lead of the story simply because it involves video games.

"Detectives investigating the strangulation death of 16-year-old Kimmie Daily are trying to determine whether her accused killer might have been acting out a violent fantasy from Dungeons and Dragons. The video game theory comes from something Tyler Savage himself said to investigators. He talked about playing a video game to cope with what he'd just done. Detectives now want to know if that game somehow became his point of reference on reality.

Magic and swordplay is present in the violent fantasy landscape that makes up the online game. Investigators said it's the game Savage played after raping and killing a mentally disabled neighbor."
Yes exactly. Because in Dungeons & Dragons Online you rape and kill developmentally disabled women all the time. In fact, I hear there is a mod where your character will level up faster if they are covered in retard blood.  Its called the "Hot Toffee" mod. I heard about it on the internet tubes once.

Needless to say, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer needs hits badly and there is no better way to do it other than to stir up some video game frenzy. Luckily it looks like most of the readers have more sense than the writer of the article, but that shouldn't stop you from weighing in on the comments here.

    Unbelievable...just...incredible.

Anyone see the Daily Show coverage after the Virginia Tech shootings? it covered this fascination perfectly - every news show discussing video games and violent movies, pushing speculation and fearmongering - and then they interviewed the shooter's roomie, and it turned out he "wasn't into video games" - and it was like this was a shocking fact, and now there was just NO REASON he could've done it.

    Incredible.

The "Seattle Post-Intelligencer" is possibly the lamest name for a magazine I've heard in a while.

Also I like how Dungeons and Dragons has been around for like, for fucking ever and now all of a sudden it's being tied to folks killin'.

Just a side note, because I'm a grammar nazi, I think you mean "cite" instead of "site"?

I'm sorry but did I just step into a time machine? I feel like I'm in the 80s when D&D was blamed for stupid shit and Mazes and Monsters came out to fuck it up even more. Has the press run out of things to blame GTAIV and Doom on?

Thats awful that they would blame something this severe on something that has nothing to do with it. You would think they would have some logic. No one reads the Seattle PI anyway.

I've been laughing for the past three minutes. How can people even take this seriously? D&D is based off of a board game!

Some of the stupidest things I hear are people with no idea what they're talking ab out, blaming games for horrible murders, and I don't know where he pulled Dungeons and Dragons from and connected it with strangling a 16 year old kid, wtf!

Soooo... he played the game after he murdered the girl, so the game was the cause of murdering the girl in the first place?

    You're fucking kidding me, right?

Im guessing you guys have heard of Jon Venebals well at the end of almost every news story I've read about him doing something terrible it will mention once, but often more that he enjoys violent video games including medal of honour. Even in proper news papers like the guardian they will still say this to try to create a frenzy over video games and personly I can't figure out what there objective is in doing this but to me it just seems like pointless fear mongering.

You know I just had a conversation with my mom on how its not the videogames that are causing these children to do this stuff. Its there upbrining. It is how the parents raise them. Just like from the last "videogame blamend" article. If you let an 8 year old play an M rated game and he is violent with the other kids in school, thats your problem, not the game. A 20 year old playing the same game is not going to act like that, why? Cause he knows right from wrong. You child dosent get over it. And the face that D&D was blamend this time. That is just too stupid. Like its not offensive that they blamend this game. Its just not logical. I have been playing games for the past 15 years, have I have raped anyone? Maybe.... no I'm just kidding. This kind of stupidity will go on forever though, as long as its not the parents fault right?

Pfft, article totally makes sense. Why would it be the Murderer's fault for killing the women? Obviously it has to be the Video Games and the Media telling him exactly what to do. It's preposterous to think that maybe there were problems at home or at school that had influenced him into this. I applaud the news for doing this... That's just what I feel like is going through their heads right now. Might as well be.

God everyday the American media loses just a bit more respect from me. That's why I only follow international news agencies like BBC, at least they report the news instead of blathering on about stupidity like this.

The only news here is that Rockstar Games would be FURIOUS that some lousy 1970's role-playing adventure game took the credit for this kill.

Everytime I read a dumbass article in the newspaper I get the urge to rape and kill retarded women. How about we do away with the Seattle Post-Intelligencer?

Jeez, blaming D&D for kids' actions? It's the 70's all over again. Hopefully, we won't get a movie about how evil Mazes & Monsters is this time.
