Gaming analyst guru, and mighty wizard, Michael Pachter was quick to come out today and bellow his feelings about the recently announced $150 price point for Kinect.
"We disagree...and think that standalone Kinect, at $149, is not as good a value as a standalone Wii at $199, which comes with two games (instead of one) and a much deeper library of content," Pachter said. "On a bundled basis, we agree that Kinect plus the Arcade 360 is a compelling value, at only $100 more than a Wii bundle, but with the deep library of Xbox 360 games available, plus a robust multiplayer experience and the opportunity for value added Xbox Live services. In both cases, we think that Kinect is competitive with Sony’s Move controller, given that the latter costs $179 for the complete experience ($99 for the Move controller, Eye and game bundle, plus $49 for an extra Move controller required for many games, plus $29 for the subcontroller required for many games). We think that the Kinect bundle with the new Arcade SKU has a significant value advantage over Move plus the PS3, coming in at $299 compared to $479 for the Move/console bundle."
I don't think anyone outside of the Microsoft echo chamber really thought that Kinect was going to be a significant challenger to the Wii and Pachter agrees on point.
"We don’t see a meaningful threat to the Wii at these prices. The all-in cost of the Arcade bundle is still $299, $100 above the Wii, and we think that some people (but not most) will find that attractive," he said. "The all-in cost of the PS3 plus a complete Move package is $479; $399 for the PS3, game, Move and Eye, another $80 for an extra Move and a sub-controller. At this price, we do not think that Sony’s offering is particularly competitive with the Wii."
*slow and steady clap*
Its interesting that he sees Kinect in a better position than Move. I happen to disagree. Though Kinect seems to be much more of a multimedia device, Move seems much more adept as a gaming peripheral and I'm betting that Sony fans eat that shit up.
As you can see, things get a little more damning for Microsoft when the Wii comes into the picture.
So is there anyone who is planning on buying this thing? Anyone actually interested in the bundle?

I agree, Microsoft and Sony are trying to capatalize on the Wiis motion control concept, with sensors and shit. I also agree the only ones that think itll be better than the Wii are the 360 fanboys.

I can't see what advantages the kinect has other than it has the name XBOX stapled onto it. I think people who buy this may be under the illusion that kinect will make every xbox game motion sensor playable. The wii had its advantages as it didn't have a back catologue of games to live up to.

the only advantage I see here is that you can actually kick people in a fighting game with the Kinect and run too. The only problem is that the Kinect may have the same issues as the Eyetoy where if you're like me and live in a place that has the lighting equivalent to that of a candle. That means the camera on the Move will have that same problem, but light detection must have improved since the eye toy...right?

My Xbox died on me around February. So rather than replacing or attempting to waste money on repairs since it was long void of it's warranty, I gave the PS3 a shot since I hadn't had one yet. Mind you I have nothing against the 360, I just feel rather content with actually having a controller in my hand and I don't foresee myself going out to get a new console anytime soon. And aside from that, most of the people I know that own 360s who would even be remotely interested in Kinect already have a Wii.
What I find confusing is how hard Microsoft is pressing this as their next big thing when it's really just an accessory. I can see Kinect as a standalone maybe having some success among the casual audience with sales around the holiday season, but the Bundle really doesn't sound that compelling with just 4GB.

Not once did he mention the extras you have to buy for the wii to obtain the same experience as Kinect. I love Pachter and mostly agree with him. (except Move. I agree with Joseph that its got its own market who will eat it up) he just doesn't follow his own rules by mentioning extras required (or not required such as the sub controller) for the PS3 while not mentioning them for the Wii. The Wii works and is out and established. Who knows how well kinect works, it has no established games, they are all the same or similar to the wii. Sony Move has its own legs to stand on, Hardcore gamers who like motion control will jump all over it, if they already have a camera, don't want the "free" game and are fine with using a sixaxis/DS3 will only spend $50 getting into the scene.

Ya i have to agree Joesph 300$ for the Kinect bundle which includes the shitty arcade Xbox 360 that holds 4GB and the kinect item with one game plus the wifi and xbox live subscriptions that cost 100 dollar or more depending on the amount of users. Or the PS3 bundle that is roughly the same price with a better hard drive and the move controller has functionality for the other ps3 games

Wow, A statement Pachter made that I actually agree with! :D I also agree with The Christ on this one: there really is nothing to take advantage of in that bundle

Sony never expected the Move to sell more consoles or broaden the audience, only expand the experience for current PS3 users. So the $479 bundle is moot. The individual bundles is where they are competitive with each other. Microsoft is trying to move more units with their device, especially for the Arcade sku. 4GB will allow to install how many games and/or how many other media items in the Xbox live store? It can't be much, but then a customer would still have to pay for Live and whatever other things a person would need to buy to equal the experience PS3 offers for free. Everyone is forgetting these devices are simply peripherals built to extend the lifespan of the current consoles. Their individual lifespans will be short and forgettable, much like the Power Glove, Super Scope, and the Power Pad. Nintendo is generations ahead of releasing stupid devices we never used more than a few times.

The only thing I thought was interesting was watching the movies together, but that was even pretty stupid. Another thing, they seem to be advertising this as a way to communicate via video chat... Why would people want to go out and buy an xbox and Kinect, then purchase an xbox live subscription and then always have to change their TV to whatever AV setting it has to be set to to show the xbox picture, when someone can just as easily buy a laptop with a webcam and download Skype for free, and while video chatting still be able to watch TV... I think it's stupid. If anything, I would get this for Christmas from someone who thinks I want it, but I'd probably just sell it to someone for double the price who knows jack shit about the thing and tell em "It's awesome!"

I gotta admit, that is a good point. Why buy a Kinect when you can get a Wii that basically does the same thing for around the same price and has a lot more value to it since your getting an entire console with different features.

Kinect has potential, but only if it moves from beyond the "mini-game" realm of most motion devices.
I remember a similar system back in my younger days (Yeah, the technology is old, it was just never feasible for the home) at the Kid's section of Museums.
Minigames, all of them.
Depending on how accurate Kinect becomes, you could very well have a complete FPS, or at least a rail shooter, where your character interacts with the Environment based on how your body behaves.

I don't think the higher price (over a Wii) will be much of an issue. A lot of people already have Wii's, and a lot of those same people are going to overestimate Kinect's abilities and fun-factor as well as developer support and creativity, and think it's actually a bargain.
General opinion of Move is probably going to be like the PS3: everybody hates it at first because it's expensive and doesn't have any really good exclusives, but I think that will change over time. What it needs to live that long is support from developers , which I think it will get because at the very least, devs can just make a Wii game and work on a Move port at the same time.

J52 raises a good point. Statistically speaking, EVERYONE who will be getting one, has a Wii. Some people are so magical they have two; I know plenty of people who went out for that Black Wii when it was announced. So comparing the price of the Wii to the other motionware is kinda moot.
Microsoft is doing a good job with their bundle, and SONY is doing a good job of keeping shit underaps by not talking about the completely necessary additonal hardware(the second wand and the chuck) when they mention price.
I won't be getting either of these things, but I think they're pressence is important to dethrone Nintendo and their lackluster lineup that for the past 4-5 years has dominated the sales charts. They've gotten comfortable and just churned out piece of crap after piece of crap (the cooking mamas, the workout games, all of it) and now that the competitors will have the same ability, Nintendo will be forced to actually innovate and try again. The 3DS looks like a step in the right direction, now all we need is a Wii2 that has good games and real processing power.

Well, my xbox has died again, so going to get it repaired. However, its on its last year of warranty, therefore if this new console turns out to be reliable then the bundle seems worth it, apart from how much would a new version hard drive would be standalone, then it could be a problem.
The NATAL (I am not keen on Kinect) seems far too pricey, I mean I would buy Child of Eden and maybe rent Dance Central and then I am always going to buy Fable 3 no matter what (they really to show off the natal integration). However, everything thing else being released, is the reason why my wii sits in dust most of the time.
I do think at launch 'Kinect' will be at a less value price compared to the wii, but when the the controller+Kinect integrations start happening, thats when I feel it may become a better value for us "core gamers".(Yep it depends on what the software does now)
One thing that bothers me, I was never interested in Joyride, but remember last year it was a free arcade game with payable extras, well now its a full priced game because of the motion controls. What happened?
*Sigh* Lets wait for two years to pass, when the good Kinect games appear...
...And that is when we will be looking towards the next generation of consoles.
