100 Meeeeellion dollars! That's how much of an investment Blizzard has but into Starcraft 2 according to a Wall Street Journal article released a few days ago. And this is just straight up development costs, not including the ridiculous amount of marketing that will be going into the title. Yes this is a lot of money, and gaming sites are falling over each other to tell you just what a REDICULOUS amount of money this is. But honestly, Blizzard is a money machine. No, not just a money machine, a money cyborg with a giant roll of $100 dollar bills where his robotic wang should be. World of Warcraft alone boasts at least 11.5 million players. That's 11.5 million people forking over $15 dollars a month, or 172.5 million dollars a month. A MONTH! And we're not even taking into account sales of mounts and other in-game trinkits.
So while everyone is amazed at how much money Starcraft II is costing to develop, I'm wondering why Blizzzard is holding back. The new Blizzard MMO that no one knows about is the only thing I can think of. (And 0f course the steady feast of unbaptized infants which Bobby Kotick requires to keep him firmly set in this mortal coil doesn't come cheaply.)
So enjoy your PITTANCE RTS players. hahaha.

what would be even funnier is if star craft 2 sucked xD.
that would be a waste of money, but hey, as long as blizzard has WoW no lifers to feed off of, it wont matter

When you're game is a national sport of an entire country, I think as a developer you don't have to worry too much about getting the development AND marketing costs back.
Rather, you'd have to worry about making the game so bad that said country DOESN'T adopt the sequel.

Aside my horrid use of you're instead of your. I wonder how much will ultimately be spent on Diablo III? While it's not a national sport, it still has a fanatical fanbase. Seeing that quite a few people still play Diablo II, which was released 10 years ago, I wonder if development costs will be comparable to Starcraft II's.

Why would they need to spend more? It's already a ridiculous amount of money for a game they want to run on as many machines as possible (it's pretty low spec).
Also, the budget for Avatar was something like 240 million. So, uh, money goes a long way. Just for a comparison. If they doubled their budget they could make Avatar.

looks like its time for south korea to get a new national sport

Well that makes me wonder...if they spent less money on World Of Warcraft but they are charging a monthly fee. Would that mean that there would be a feature or two that players might have to pay for? I bet this is an idiotic question but it does make abit of sense does it not?

Actiblizzard has so much money now I don't think they care if Starcraft 2 is going to be notasgood as the first one. I'm just wondering when they're going to use all those millions of dollars to make an original IP or at least a game that isn't an RTS or an MMO.

That's just Hollywood Acounting. 100million dollars was not spent on developing Starcraft 2.

To bad Starcraft II is episodic. Players will end up paying off the $100 million in development 10 times over.

I doubt the game will suck it beta tested for over 2 months trying to balance the races. That's probably what most are going to view if they make the game balance and story exciting this game will sell like hot cakes

Jesus, Mary and Joseph that's a lot of money for a game. We're talking a cinematic budget.
