If you own a DS and haven't picked up Dragon Quest IX then allow me to bring forth the feeling of utter, desolate, loneliness to your otherwise battered and withered body.  This morning  Gamasutra brought us their latest sales numbers compiled from amazon.com starting July 22nd, and it shows Dragon Quest IX in the lead for the North American and UK markets.

Nintendo DS
North America: 1. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies (Nintendo), 2. Mario Kart DS (Nintendo), 3. New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo), 4. Toy Story 3 (Disney), 5. The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (Nintendo).

Japan: 1. Fire Emblem: Shin Monshou no Nazo Hikari to Kage no Eiyuu (Nintendo), 2. Tokimeki Memorial Girls Side 3rd Story (Konami), 3. Inazuma Eleven 3: Sekai e no Chousen!! Spark (Level 5), 4. Love Plus+ (Konami), 5. Inazuma Eleven 3: Sekai e no Chousen!! Bomber (Level 5).

UK: 1. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies (Nintendo), 2. Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 (Warner Bros.), 3. Professor Layton and Pandora's Box (Nintendo), 4. New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo), 5. Toy Story 3 (Disney).

Square Enix's Dragon Quest IX tops the Nintendo DS software sales charts in North America for the second week running. Mario Kart DS trails at second place, as New Super Mario Bros. overtakes Toy Story 3 for third.

Fire Emblem: Shin Monshou no Nazo Hikari to Kage no Eiyuu and Tokimeki Memorial Girls Side 3rd Storyhead Japanese DS sales for the second week in a row, as Dragon Quest IX is off to a stellar start in Europe.
I'm in the middle of Dragon Quest IX now and I can tell you that's it a fantastic little game.  If you all don't pick it up then surely the terrorists have already won.

A few other intersting tidbits from Gamasutra's numbers?  The Japanese love games with extremely long titles and PC gamers are, apparently, still buying games as if it was the 90's.

How far are you Joseph? Me I just unlocked Ranger class and I'm loving Boomerang. I believe I'm 2 or 3 Dragonballs in and just about to get my boat. Even though it doesn't have the charm and DQ5 or 8 but I absolutely adore class systems.

Surprising in the sense that it's a Dragon Quest title topping western charts, but considering how the game was marketed here in the UK (adverts on every 5 seconds...) it's also very unsurprising.

WHY ARE PEOPLE STILL BUYING THE NW MARIO BROS?

    that game is just RAGE-inducing.

I'd get DQ9 but none of my friends have a DS and I feel that's kinda the point of having that game, to play with ppls

I would like to reiterate how awesome that header image is. This is a news item about a Japanese game doing well in America and the UK. What better image than a bunch of American's and Europeans, dressed like Sumo wrestlers, and celebrating. It hits all of the points of the article with the precision of a sober Rabbi performing a circumcision.
