Enjoying Demon's Souls?  Maybe haven't played enough of it yet?  Well you might think about moving the game up from the bottom of the list because the North American servers may only be guaranteed to exist till March 2011.  Atlus released a statement today which some fear could put a short lifespan on on the online mode for one of the best RPG's released last year.

From Computer and Entertainment.com:

Atlus has today confirmed that it will keep the North American servers for the game running "through at least" March 2011. "At least" means the servers won't go down BEFORE March next year, but it certainly serves as a startling gauge on just how short the lifespan on the game's online modes is like (sic) to be.

Now before people get all crazy about this, the online EULA of the game does state that the servers are guaranteed for one year after game release.  This may not be Atlus so much as saying they will cut off the servers in March of next year, as they are saying that they do not have the option to till that time.  And, honestly, its extremely likely that server support will continue after that time period.

The news, however, put a bit of a shiver in my bones and my copy of Demon's Souls may get more playtime in the next few weeks because of it.  And it also goes to show just how vulnerable our online console experiences really are.

I was shocked to learn that this game will be losing it's online support so shortly after garnering much support from established as well as new players. Highly glowing reviews, steady sales and word of mouth have helped launch this game from obscurity to cult status in a matter of months.

After recently finishing my first playthrough of this game as well as completing a new game plus with the same character in an attempt to see what everyone else was talking about, I'm happy to claim that this game has made it well into my top 20, possibly even my top 10. Playing online was in itself an entirely different kind of game from the single player and I will be sad knowing that late adopters will be missing out on such a unique and compelling part of the experience that is Demon's Souls. Hopefully we'll be getting an announcement of the sequel when server shut-down day arrives.

This saddens me greatly to hear that one of my fav games of all time will not support online, possibly the most important and vital component of that game. I feel A LOT of people will stop playing Demon's Souls or won't even bother to give Demon's Souls a chance because of the removal of the servers.

It honestly wouldn't bother me that much if they shut the servers down. While the online features were cool, I never made much use of them. And you pretty much have to play offline if you want to get the right world tendency events.

Man if Atlus eventually removes the online half the game would be removed no more invaded other worlds or being invaded part of the dread was having your heart stop when the red word You are being invaded appear then instantly your mind races to create plans of attack against an unknown foe who may have similar style of combat or one that is completely new

I haven't finished this game yet, I don't remember why I put it down. Looks like I'll have to pick it back up and finish it before the servers go down. I usually go through games with online features like this as soon as possible just in case of something like this happening.

Officially, Demon's Souls was to only have 6 months of online support. It's because of the strong community here that it will be up till March 2011.

    Though... that's approximately an exact 1 year extension from the original shutdown date. Does this mean... Demons's Souls's - Thes's Quests's fors's Mores's Ss's... I mean... Demon's Souls 2, slated for a release next year... :O

    One could hope.

From what I've seen on http://www.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/7138.html there isn't going to be a Demon's Souls 2 which is a major disappointed to me. Still i think after 2011 i will find another rpg to occupy my time with maybe elder scrolls 5 will have a few announcements by then

It saddens me to see this incase I ever get the itch to play demons souls after march 2011. Thats the main reason I haven't sold or traded it in the first place but in all honesty I haven't played it in several months anyway so it makes sense. It still makes me sad.

I may not have played much of this game, but I know that the communication from players within the environment was one of the cooler unique mechanics about Demon Souls. And hows the invading going to work?

And how is the last boss going to work as well as it did?

I think a lot of the tension will be lost through this, then again losing it in 2011 is better than 6 months.

I didn't play this game a whole lot at first, mainly because it was SO HARD. Took me 3 hours to beat the first level. The consequences of dying, replaying the level, really made me rethink my strategy. I felt like a lot more was at stake when I died than normal. If I only have less than a year, I should play some more.
