A short (7 minute) live action Mortal Kombat movie was released today. No one really seems to know exactly what this is for, but latinoreview.com is stating that it is most probably a demo reel used to sell a project to big publishers. This could mean that this is not footage from the actual movie but, rather, a directors vision of what they would create if they get the funding.

Hit the jump for some more tidbits and the video.

Some other information taken from latinoreview.com

  • The short was directed by Kevin Tancharoen, who did the remake of Fame last year. Judging from this short, Kevin is the perfect director for this movie.

  • Jacks is played by Michael Jai White. Michael played Spawn and was in Undisputed II. Michael makes a great Jacks (Jax).

  • Sonya Blade is played by Jeri Ryan, who played Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Voyager.

  • Baraka was played by the very talented Lateef Crowder, who plays the Brazilian fighter in Undisputed III.

  • Scorpion is played by Ian Anthony Dale. Ian plays Kazuya in the upcoming big screen version of Tekken.

  • Johnny Cage was played by up and coming martial arts sensation Matt Mullins.

I know some may be skeptical but I like the direction this is going in.  Sure Mortal Kombat has a rich history but I wouldn't exactly call it prime literary material.  And I would certainly rather have a new, and good, Mortal Kombat movie then none at all.

UPDATE: Confirmed as a movie.

If its a movie then I'm looking forward to it. If it's a new game, then I'm also looking forward to see more of it.

I'm thoroughly excited, a new MK movie would be great...and redeem the follies of the previous attempts.
It's interesting to note that this seems very well produced/directed, even without the backing of a major motion picture company, that is, if this is indeed a "demo reel".
I do like the way Jax is played by M.White, he definitely fits the mold, and before I say this..i know looks arent everything, but he doesn't look well versed in the area of Muay Thai, as Jax is in the series.

I honestly enjoyed watching the previous MK movies, though I disliked the fighting games.

This promo or whatever has me sold if such movie does release, worth checking out.
Tony Jaa better be in this!
