A few days ago, actually on the plane ride to LA, I wrote an article asking if anyone else was interested in 3D.  I know I wasn't.  Some people complained about the glasses, I always felt like games in 3D just never really looked all that good. And ultimately most of me felt like there was just so much gimmicky shit out there right now that there was simply no more room for any of it.

Today, at 900am Pacific Time, Nintendo made me its bitch.

The announcement, detail release, and my hands-on with the Nintendo 3DS has made me a believer.  Not in 3D gaming generally, but in 3D gaming the way Nintendo is providing it.  I may come around to the rest of it, but right now its time for me and Nintendo to get down to business.  Nintendo was able to get my gamer goo-bazooka rock hard, and I've just put on my sweatpants to show it off to the world.

The Nintendo 3DS is really like nothing else you have seen before. Its a complete overhaul of the Nintendo handheld system, a reinvisioning of handheld gaming as we know it.  Earlier itterations of the DS are nothing more than poppycock in its wake.  A few things the DS has?

  • Full 3D graphics with depth and pop-out effects with no glasses needed.

  • The ability to watch 3D movies, like Avatar on the system.

  • A completely overhauled graphics engine with Wii quality graphics

  • The ability to do both 2D and 3D using a slider to adjust depth

  • An analogue stick that feels very very good.

  • Improved communication and WiFi capability.

  • 3.5 inch view screen and a lower touch screen.

  • The ability to take 3D pictures.

Are you done masturbating yet?  No. I'll give you a moment then.

Oh wait...I forgot to tell you...

  • A new Kid Icarus game at launch.

There...now clean yourself off you filthy, dirty pig. The fact is that I can't blame you, in fact I even might join you.

At first I didn't believe it. Sitting at the conference listening to Satoru Iwata explain the system I knew that I had to see it. I simply couldn't wrap my brain around what he was explaining.  Lucky for us, at the end of the conference, they brought out about 40 beautiful models with 3DS's strapped to their waists for us to have a hands-on encounter with before we left the building.  As I walked up I can honestly say that I've never been so disintersted in a beautiful woman in all my life.  There in front of me were characters from Pikman, then Mario, then Link there in front of me in glorious 3D. No glasses...popping out of the screen.  I got goosebumps. I made Nick Henderson feel them.

I know that there is a lot of pomp and circumstance being thrown around here. But honestly I can hardly explain how excited I am about this.  In my opinion Nintendo won E3 2010 and didn't have to spend a small fortune on French Tumblers and space poncho's to do it.

And I haven't even gotten into the new Kirby game.

The only mystery that remains is both the price and the release date of the system.  Our own guessing puts it at around $200, if only because I can't see Nintendo ever charging more for a handheld system out of principle.  Release date is unknown and still seems that they are just beginning to work closely with 3rd Party developers to get games in check. What were some developers and games we did hear were going to be made for the 3DS? How about?

  • Saints Row

  • Resident Evil

  • Metal Gear Solid

  • Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Just to name a few. In fact, just as I'm writing this, Nintendo has updated their twitter account to announce they are going to be releasing an updated version of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the 3DS. Updated graphics and fully 3D.

Like I said. Nintendo wins E3 2010.

It is to bad the 3D effect is lost with a simple tilt of the head (like all 3D products).

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is, I believe a Wii title, not 3DS.

They also announced a Star Fox 64 remake. I've spent the last 4 years bashing Nintendo, this E3 made me a believer again.

Nintendo simply mutilated all other conferences with the announcement of the 3DS. I simply could not believe it when they showed Kid Icarus: Uprising gameplay on the 3DS. I swear, it looked like the Wii engine for a second. With the list of upcoming games (OoT and MGS mostly for me) coming for the 3DS and the thought of full on 3D capabilities WITHOUT glasses? LET ME PRE-ORDER NOW! And I like how Nintendo is going back to its roots, re-releasing the classic beloved N64 games for a new generation to experience, while sending us veteran gamers a wild trip on nostalgia. Truly, Nintendo strikes again this year (and may have stolen my heart from Microsoft), and we'll expect other companies to come treading along after all this gimmicky motion sensor crap in a couple years while Nintendo thinks two steps ahead in yet again revolutionizing the gaming industry.

They really did have a great conference, I am so glad I watched all the conferences live (not so much of MS and Ubisoft's tragic lineups). The Nintendo conference pulled out some amazing surprises. And then at the end they gave booth babes with 3ds's, and well that system has a great forthcoming lineup.

wii had 5 thumbs down from me, the 3DS looked like a sry version of any 3D of anything, plus their selling a whole new thing that coulda been implaneted in the XL as an update, its a terrible excuse for a system

To be honest, I'm more excited for the analogue stick and the better CPU and GPU power than the 3D capabilities of the system. Sony needs to step up their game or the PSP will certainly become obsolete.

Ugh he's been with the site for like a year now...He even hosts a show on the site, the majority of the community knows him. He's been doing A LOT of the E3 blogging, and a great job at that.

I'm really happy with this, I was originally thinking about selling my DS for a DSi but after hearing all this.. I think I will wait for the 3DS release and I'm also happy when I heard about N64 games being put on the 3DS and being redone completely to look nice and support 3D... Nintendo did perfectly this E3!

My only concern with the 3DS was the analog stick. There hasn't exactly been a history of successfully putting that type of control on a handheld. However the blogs and hands on impressions of it seem positive so I'm sold. I haven't been this excited for a gaming device in a long time.
