Word is floating around the gaming web that Vatra Games is creating the next Silent Hill as an FPS.  And as some of the fanbase rends its clothes and gnashes its teeth at the very thought of the series eschewing the third person perspective I, on the other hand, think its a dandy idea.

The Silent Hill series has been going on the same formula for quite a long time now and truly need something of a push in the series. Honestly, I've always found a first person perspective much more engrossing and, really, much more frightening when done correctly.  The Condemned series immediately come to mind as horror-themed games in a first person perspective that did a very good job of scaring the hell out of me at times.  Changing the perspective might also push Vatra Games to improve the, somewhat, shoddy combat system and mechanics that have also been an ongoing problem. In fact, they would have no other choice...unless they are intending to bring us a melee combat system reminiscent of the Oblivion, something I would hope they are hard pressed NOT to do.

Vatra Games also much retain other signature mechanics of the series and ensure that a new Silent Hill does not become something of a Run and Gun.  These games, however, have been moving in a direction to be more action oriented experiences.  Resident Evil 5 did this, but the RE series was never known for its scares, whereas Silent Hill has always been about mood and tension.

Can Vatra Games pull it off?  Well they were started by developers who were previously with 2K Games, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive.  So these are no "Green" developers we're talking about here. This could turn out to be very good indeed.

UPDATE - This rumor is now being reported as false.  And its too bad, I was really liking this idea.

Joseph is currently on tour with his band THE THEM and posting from the road when time and unsecured networks make it possible. Joseph will be returning on April 26th.

as long as its not on rails, I think it will turn out well.
Now I don't think it will be an fpS, but more in the vain of metroid prime as a fpA, though it will have shooting, the shooting itself will not be the focus of the game. it will be the mystery, the adventure/exploration, and overall the atmosphere. If they do it right, this could turn into the Metroid Prime of this gen.

I immediately thought this would be a good turn for the series when I saw mention of this a couple of days ago. Silent Hill definitely needs to change to keep gamers attention, and I think a shift of perspective ca n help that.
Lets just hope Vatra can pull it off.

Yeah Could bring in more players. Some Scenes in METRO 2033 were very scary And that mixed with the Silent Hill universe should create some interesting encounters

Also the tension should go through the roof when you cant see behind you.

One of the reasons I play Silent hill is to get away from the FPS. I love this series for the atmosphere that it gives. Whats the point of getting the sh.. scared out of you if you have to sit there and worry about aiming right and whether or not you have enough ammo to get you to the next round. I look forward to stormy nights when I can sit in complete darkness and play silent hill or any other horror game and get lost in that haunted house, look over your shoulder and get the crap scared out of me feeling. I really hope they keep this series as it is.

I always felt being in first person would be a lot scarier and immersive, and this might be what Silent Hill needs to help draw in more people to play and bring a fresh new experience.

The combat shouldn't be the main focus, but at the same time, it should be good enough where it isn't frustrating. That was probably one the biggest problems for Metro 2033.

Same formula? I'm guessing it's safe to assume you haven't played Shattered Memories then.

Personally I find myself a bit detached from a character when playing in the first person. Not necessarily in terms of control, but emotionally. Without being able to see my character no real bonds seem to form and the character becomes less sympathetic as a result. You could have made Ethan Thomas a mute and I would have had about as much attachment to the character.

While Silent Hill does seek to instill a certain tension in its players, which I agree could be improved with a switch to the first person, what the series has always done best was to make you interested in the characters on a psychological level. Delving into the depths of James' past, his emotions, and his psychosis is what makes Silent Hill 2 stand out amongst the series for many gamers, and with a level of sympathetic detachment much of the impact of these elements would have been lost. I have a hard time imagining that this could be retained in a switch to the first person. At very least I hope they keep cut-scenes in the third person.

I can agree that the gameplay of the Silent Hill series needs to be changed around a bit, I just don't know if this perspective change is the best way to go about it. That being said, I'm going to withhold judgment until the controller is in my hand.

An FPS posibly? Oh boy... ... whilst I agree the perspective can enhance the scares, silent hill is an Adventure Horror game, it should never be a FPS. Damn I was interseted in the next SH but rumours like this don't feel me with joy, anyone up for yet another short life FPS? Don't get me wrong I enjoy them but I get sick with the amount of them and SH definetly doesn't sound like a FPS.

If anyone is curious as to how this is false:

    Like any good rumor the lineage of sources is silly long:<a href="http://www.destructoid.com/rumor-silent-hill-becoming-a-first-person-shooter--171644.phtml" rel="nofollow">This Destructoid post</a> to <a href="http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/Steph+Louise+K/silent-hill-a-fps--171224.phtml" rel="nofollow">this Destructoid community blog post</a> to <a href="http://relyonhorror.com/content/new-silent-hill-game-fps" rel="nofollow">this horror game site</a> to <a href="http://www.gamegrep.com/news/32217-new_silent_hill_will_be_an_fps/" rel="nofollow">this aggregate article site</a> to <a href="http://www.fpstime.com/2010/04/silent-hill-will-be-a-fps/" rel="nofollow">the original source site.</a>

The originating site doesn't give it's sources but states a Gamasutra article ( <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/28038/CzechBased_Vatra_Games_Developing_New_Silent_Hill.php" rel="nofollow">This is the only one about the topic.</a>) and a <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2010/04/12/new-silent-hill-game-coming-to-the-pc/" rel="nofollow">Big Download post </a> with a PDF document. The Gamasutra article does not even mention anything like that in its article and the link to the PDF in the Big Download post was dead.

<a href="http://www.ddmagents.com/" rel="nofollow">Digital Development Management</a> was the source of the PDF, you can find it on their site. The slide in question that seems to insinuate that Silent Hill is a FPS is on <a href="http://www.fpstime.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/pdf-silent-hill.jpg" rel="nofollow">page 16</a>. But on <a href="http://i39.tinypic.com/2m4sxug.png" rel="nofollow">page 3</a> (my own screenshot) you see that the Genre means that is the developer's specialty, not the genre of games in development like the original site took the slide to mean.

So yeah! Not true. I oddly enjoy doing this, maybe I should more often! Hopefully, the formatting doesn't break after submitting this.

    J-

RE was about scares but a different shock/one-time only type. I'd argue it became action oriented out of necessity.

SH is just a pyscho mindfeck which is much more effective and engrossing. It was as scary as you let it get. Again, since we've seen alot design/storywise, I dunno if anything can scare us anymore...

Even though the rumor is false, I feel relieved as I don't think fps lends itself to horror very well at all. Though it can obviously be more visceral, survival feels easier and less scary with headshots lol. Fps mechanics are geared more towards action and SH until recently hasn't been about action.

You can pull the action out of the fps totally to try to make it a cheap scare, but that would just be stupid as no one about to die is that helpless. :)

Glad they are keeping in Third person. I've only played Homecoming and a little bit of 2 but, the idea of FPS really does bring me to the idea of condemned and while that was a scary game in my opinion, it's not meant for Silent Hill.

lol, silent hill as an FPS? No, that'd kill the point. It'd just end up something like Doom III.

I really don't mind if they keep the same formula. I'd rather they go back to older formulas. Something where pyramid head isn't walking around for the sake of him being in the game.

Although it must be said: Quit making us go through the damn hospital!!! It's creepy, sure, but we've done that enough!! I got the symbolism the first time, enough is enough.

Why don't they launch it as a new IP and come up with an original story?
