The announcement came down the pike today that Fable III will be an episodic release.  The form will come in one large initial episode, which will make up the larger game, followed by concurrent episodes released as DLC.

Personally Ill probably have a firmer position when we find out just how big this first episode will be and how much it will cost.  I've noticed the Fable series moving into a microtransaction model since the first DLC's for Fable II were released, and Fable II can now be downloaded as an episodic release rather than just outright buying the full game. (Note: Like everything else on XBLA Games on Demand you can actually buy the physical game cheaper at Gamespot and get, ya know, a game to hold in your hands).

Peter Molyneux had this to say for himself:

"I've often thought it would be brilliant to be walking through Charles Dickens' London. It was such a dark place and very episodic too -- so we're doing that with Fable III," he explains. "We'll give you the first big episodes, and you'll be able to download new episodes, which is analogous to the way Dickens wrote."

uh...ok Pete...Imm'a let ya finish, but a few things first. Number one, you're not Dickens.  Second, a lot of Dickens' material appeared in magazines of the early era..a medium where short form writing was the norm. Dickens, a novelist, actually went over to a different medium in order to make his serialized content work for an audience who was expecting it.  This was also in the mid 1800's. You don't read Dickens that way now, nor would anyone really want to.

I'm just saying this.  People want their game. DLC is fine, and I know a big reason everyone is pushing it is to keep people from trading in their games, but please make sure you up a large enough experience up front...an experience I can bring to completion, before you make me purchase more Microsoft moon-money.

Knowing Peter though I have a feeling that if you want to buy that castle, find that killer or marry that woman?

...please insert more coins.

The only way I'm going to bother playing Fable III is if they fix the godawful framerate issues so prevalent from Fable II.

As to this episodic release? I'd be all for it.. if they make the base game cheaper.

.. and really, what are the chances of that?

We all know we'll be paying full price for half a game.

Bah! This is crap. Between this news and the 3DS, video games are getting stupid.

Mind you, I'm willing to be pleasantly surprised by the 3DS, but ffs i dont think thats going to happen.

Why is Peter Moleneux such a Dickhead, I mean it doesn't make any sense to release Fable III as an episodic download game when the Games on demand system exists. Fable 1 was probably one of my favourite games of all time, and still is, but whilst Fable 2 was not a terrible game it has left me feeling no excitement for a sequel, which is not helped by hearing about useless mechanics such as the "touch" button.

And In my opinion hearing Moleneux camparing Dickens to this series, seems like an insult to me.

I hope that in the near future Moleneux gets fired. He's such a pretentious arse.
