Today is the day where it all starts. The end of the hype, the end of the speculation and the emergence of the real deal. Reviews have started to trickle in for Heavy Rain and though most of them are good, a lot of them also reveal many of the same problems we spoke about in our Podcast 155. Personally I feel that many of these problems are really issues with the core game so I'm surprised to see them listed and then see 90+ scores following in suit.
I have yet to play the game in full so I can't offer a review of my own and I understand that my words here can easily drown in a sea of self ignorance concerning this title. However, I can't shake the nagging feeling that Heavy Rain might be getting a pass on scores not because it is so good, but simply because it is so different.
Thoughts?

This this this this. I'm very conflicted about it myself. At the end of the day though, tip of the hat to QuanticDream because it *is* something different. It's not some generic shooter, it's not some platformer or RPG we've all seen done a million times before. It's something new, they took a chance. And it seems like in this industry it's rare when people take any sort of chance with their games. So even if it does end up breaking my heart and ruining all the hype, I think it's good they even tried.

well the reviews ive read are mixed, so ive decided im not going to take them into acoount, ive made my decision already
like skyliner said the fact that the game is trying to do something interesting is what intruiged me in the first place so i will be leaving my preorder as it is and will be trying it out for myself.
if the game isnt all that great, i hope it at least sells enough for the devs to get another go at it

I think even if that's the case, it should be rewarded for its ambitions and for not beeing the usual mainstream shit. In my opinion we need more developers like this, who try to make something new, even if its not that great in the end.

If people start to not like Proper mature games with interesting story lines now we might not see them in the future .
I do not expect to play Heavy Rain and"Pwn Noobs". I want an engaging story , that I feel I react to and not Control it.
Besides the first one rocked and there,s nothing else good out now....I don't count Mass Effect 2 because that sucks .

I've been getting twitter updates all morning about the reviews for heavy rain... and there all 5 out of 5's or 10 out of 10s...

It seems that with many games, there are exceptions to the rule of bad reviews and scores as long as they are innovated enough, have a big enough fan base, or do something that the majority of players enjoy. Even if the game has flaws, players seem to forgive them because of the factors stated before, which is unfair because it may receive good scores for now but it's not until the hype disappears that we take a real good look at it and have an unbiased opinion about it.
That being said, it still looks to be quite interesting and even if it doesn't turn out to be the leap in gaming that people might be expecting, it looks like an experience that shouldn't be skipped.

I'm thinking I will get the game probably because it does feel so different. Also the demo was pretty good since I basically played it with knowing very little. And Joseph why not try the demo to get a tiny bit of feel for it? Its coming out Thursday or you can get it through gamesharing http://4playerpodcast.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4088
And yes its allowed by sony.

@Skrammas: I've been playing the demo since it was released through the Heavy Rain website game last week.

I have to agree that the voice acting is not the greatest but like Indigo Prophecy I wasn't expecting Mass Effect 2 caliber dialogue from a fairly small french studio. Other than that I think the animation is spectacular, and the controls+camera are far superior to that of Indigo.

Joseph you are right. Tha game is something different and something new. There were... I don't know maybe two games before that had the mechanics like Heavy Rain. Indigo Prophecy got an 8.4 from IGN and that was in 2005. Since then there were no games like this.
The demo of Heavy Rain made my think about what the game will be in more action based sequences. It was a bit hard in Indigo Prophecy but here... I need to see the full game to tell what it is.
For now I give the game an "8" because I don't know how the full game will look and work.

I loved the demo to Heavy Rain. I thought it was very well made. I don't believe that it is getting a pass because it's so different and they basically have nothing to compare it to other than Indigo Prophecy. They're trying to take a new narrative approach to it and I hope it pays off. There are no cutscenes, you can't put down your controller at any point because the second you put it down, one of your characters may die.
The way I perceive it is maybe the game suffers in a few areas, but maybe in the areas it excels in, it may go above and beyond what they believed may have been possible in a video game media so that makes up for the areas it were lacking. That's like saying the Halo series was getting a pass even though the single player sucked but the multi was great. What may be lacking in one area is made up for in another.
