Project Beast Definitely Looks Like The Next Souls Game

Ever since word leaked of an in-progress game codenamed “Project Beast” from Demon’s/Dark Souls developers From Software, rumors have swirled about the game being a follow-up to the beloved franchise - everything from word that it could be Demon’s Souls 2, a new IP, or even “Beast Souls” (coinciding with the original code name for Dark Souls, “Project Dark”).

A handful of screenshots leaked not long ago rang strongly of the washed-out colors and thick atmosphere of the Souls series, even featuring the classic fog gate rendered in what certainly seemed to be next-gen (current-gen?) graphics. Of note was a shotgun being wielded by what appeared to be the player character, as crossbows were up to this point the most advanced weaponry present.

Now a very brief teaser of Project Beast gameplay, effectively stringing together the leaked screenshots, has released. And boy, does this look like a Souls game. Note that the background music, which is from the Demon’s Souls soundtrack, was added by the uploader.

Look to the sprinting, the camera, the backstep (with a slick shotgun blast!); look to the pose as the player passes through the fog gate. If this isn’t a Souls game, then it is a game from the same developer as the Souls series with the same director as Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls which looks and seems to function just like a Souls game.

A snippet of gameplay leaked around this time suggests an appearance at E3, though that may be wishful thinking, and it deserves to be noted that a fair number of people believe this may be Demon’s Souls 2. If this is Demon’s Souls 2, it is a powerful exclusive release for Sony, as they currently own the Demon’s Souls IP. Showing off the next Souls game and declaring it PS4-exclusive would be a surefire way to give major points in Sony’s favor.

E3 is only weeks away, so it’s possible we may see more then. Definitely stay tuned.
