With only a few days since rumors began to spread that a new (possibly two) Assassin’s Creed game would make its debut, Ubisoft has unveiled the first teaser trailer and made the game official. Coming this winter to PS4, Xbox One, and PC, Assassin’s Creed Unity appears to be a new hero taking on the templars during the French Revolution.

Being the huge Assassin’s Creed fan I am, I have a few thoughts.

  1. Setting the game in France during the revolution is certainly a rich backdrop for a series like this but I can’t help but feel like it’s a bit underwhelming following last year’s Black Flag. Details are trickling out slowly so there is still time to impress.
  2. Ship combat. Will it be a prominent feature? Honestly, I hope not. They did an amazing job with Black Flag but each of these games needs to have a hook that will leave a unique mark on the franchise. Otherwise, each game will become irrelevant as soon as the next game releases. Not sure what that hook is this time but hopefully it’s coming.
  3. Dropping the number off the title in exchange for a subtitle screams “FILLER” to me. Is this the Arkham Origins of the Assassin’s Creed world? Will it have anything meaningful to contribute to the series other than being another well made but uninspired game; effectively bridging the gap to the next benchmark game in the franchise? If this game doesn’t deliver, Ubisoft is treading dangerous waters with their flagship series.
  4. Lastly… Another male protagonist? Seriously? When the hell is this franchise going to feature a female heroine on a platform other than their dwindling handheld? That in itself would open all kinds of doors and give a game like this what it needs to become memorable.

So far, I am mildly excited and understandably concerned. Am I excited to see the first Assassin’s Creed built from the ground up for the new generation of hardware? Sure. Unfortunately, everything else about this game seems underwhelming. Now’s your chance to surprise me Ubisoft. Please don’t let me down. Please don’t let your wonderful series follow in the footsteps of Call of Duty. That is all that I ask.

Assassin's Creed Unity will launch this Winter on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

"Please don’t let your wonderful series follow in the footsteps of Call of Duty."

A little late for that... Because we need our AC fix shove down our throat every year!

And meh. I think Assassin's Creed 4 wasn't worthy of the pedestal many put it on. Big open world? You mean big empty world. Sure, there was lots of islands, but those were empty or had only a bloody collectable on it. I could fish and hunt! But there wasn't any incentive to do so as the number of material needed for crafting were negligible. I could raid ships! Arg maties! Then again, as awesome as it was, doing this same repetitive chore again and again for hours felt stale really fast. And the "assassin" parts were far from being the spotlights of the game...

I hadn't played an AC since 2. Playing 4 made me remember why I had stopped following this IP.

I feel this can't be a filler game. The first full "Next gen" Assassins Creed game and they a make it filler. I don't think so. If anything this should be a significant change for the franchise. I think Ubisoft is slowly trying to make a pick and choose franchise. If you have played the previous games then you're fine but even if you have never played any or only one , you'll still be OK. With Black Flag they realized they had gotten purchases from players that have never played any of the previous games.

As for the Hook. I agree with you 100% Nick. Each game needs it own identity with its own unique features. Arkham Knight has its new hook with the Batmobile.

If they do decide to do ship combat i still think it will be welcomed by many. In fact the French Revolution had plenty of naval battles. A coincidence is that the French Navy in 1790 had a famous Battleship called originally "Unité" which translates to Unity.

I love the French Revolution Era, I wonder if we get to see the scarlet pimpernel? Anyway I just hope there is some sort of tie in with the main characters of AC3&4 because I'd rather wait for a good game that continues the story then just fill in's - have they not learnt with Revelations which was one fill in too much. Having said all this I am a die hard fan, so more than likely I'll be buying Unity because who would not want to parkour Notre Dame :-)

I'm not really a big Assassin's Creed fan, but I did like Black Flag for the amount of pirate shenanigans you could do. If they could make the ship combat as good as Black Flag, if not better, then I'd be interested to see how this game turns out.

I don't really expect them to change the basic assassin's creed formula especially if they have been working on this for 3 years like they claim. I'm expecting a better looking assassin's creed 3 and am NOT ok with that...
